Why do police bother chasing stolen cars ?

It's a damn car , it does not make any sense when people are put in danger with a car chase . If were my car I would feel bad enough knowing anyone got killed to get it back or arrest someone .

There has got to be a better way of dealing with this .

1. Because people often steal them specifically to commit a crime, and then dump. And...

if they're evading police like that, it gives police the impression they've got more to hide than car theft.

3. you're exactly right

often these cars are used in robberies or drive-by shootings, then abandoned and torched. If police don't chase these stolen cars, the could be used as a means to commit an even worse crime.

7. I don't believe that at all

Perhaps once in a while but my point is someone gets killed to prevent a crime , some person who just is in the wrong place at the wromg time .

Chasing the car is not the solution , how many times do they need before they change this .

5. Actually

there is a better way in deveopement.

A company in Virginia whose name eludes me at the moment is developing a mini air-cannon which fire a sticky projectile containing a GPS tracker. Then the police can track the car where ever it goes.

6. In New Jersey it got to be a huge thing after...

car chases caused regular accidents and the occasional death and injury.

There were state rules and many towns set their own rules for when to chase, and most places had to have someone authorize the chase.

Since you never get that sort of throttle on the cops without giving something away, there was much discussion about how the chasee would be charged with murder, or at leat manslaughter, if the chasing cop hit and killed someone. Needless to say, the sun would never shine on the chasee again if HE hit and killed someone.

10. Most stolen car from around here quickly end up in Mexico, so there are very few car chases.
