Is it ever ok to kill a two-year-old?
I saw Will Pitt's excellent post about women in advertising immediately after seeing this appalling story on Comcast homepage this morning:

Lawyer: Discipline Led to Girl's Death

This undated booking photo released by the Galveston County Sheriff's office...

HOUSTON —

The stepfather of a 2-year-old girl lost control and beat her to death because she wouldn't say "please" and "yes sir," an attorney for the girl's mother said Wednesday.
...

In her statement to Galveston authorities, Trenor said the girl was beaten with leather belts, had her head held underwater in a bathtub and then was thrown across a room, her head slamming into a tile floor.

Although the affidavit said the couple abused Riley over a four- to six-hour period, Stickler said it wasn't a continuous event. Instead, Zeigler grew increasingly enraged as he spanked Riley and she kept forgetting to do things the way he wanted.

How in the name of whatever you hold dear can these creatures ever be allowed to roam the earth freely again?

And yet the lawyers will try to rationalize it away as "parental discipline" and an "accident"

At one point, Trenor wanted to call an ambulance but Zeigler wouldn't let her, saying they would both be arrested if officials saw her injuries,

The most they will probably pin on them is manslaughter. Hell, even if the baby had survived, this should be a capital crime, just to be sure to exterminate these people forever from the gene pool.

1. "to exterminate these people
forever from the gene pool" ..... a curious statement, in the context of someone who killed her two-year old.

3. It's just awful.
That girl was from near where I live.

This man was psychotic. A control freak who discovered that 2-year-olds cannot be "controlled" in the way he imagined.

Yes, his lawyer will probably try to say it was an accident. Or that he is not guilty by reason of insanity, if that is possible. That's because the lawyer will know there is little chance of trying any other sort of defense.

She will probably have separate counsel, if she is wise, and realizes that he appears to have been the one who took control and took the lead on all this. That way, HER lawyer can build a case that she didn't want to do it, she was afraid of him, she did it just to avoid the wrath she saw he was capable of, she was a victim of emotional abuse, etc. He was the monster, she was just another victim. That will be her attempted defense.

But know this: Chances are that if their lawyers are not sociopaths, they are only doing what they are doing because it's their job and because everyone in America has the right to a lawyer, even these people (or excuses therefor). Every day when they go to work, their stomachs are probably turning. And if their clients are found guilty, something deep inside them may breathe a little sigh of relief. Because, deep in their souls, they know. They know when justice is done.

5. I guess if you want to exterminate someone's genes, your answer must be...
yes? To the question you have posed, "Is it ever ok to kill a two-year-old?", I mean.

Probably that was the exact same thinking of the stepfather who beat this child to death...eliminate the previous progeny of this woman, spawn of another man, to tidy things up in the gene pool, so to speak.

Since when has capital punishment become something to root for in this nation?
