Export demand for Chinese toys rise despite US recalls
Mumbai: Export demand for toys from China's Guangdong Province, a major base for the toy-making industry, has increased despite a spate of recalls in the US and Europe earlier this year, customs authorities said.

While the value of toys exported from the southern Chinese province of Guangdong is down 5.4 per cent in September compared to the same period last year, the October figures show an year-on-year increase of 27.6 per cent, according to latest customs data.

The increase was spurred by rising demands in the Christmas retail season. Also, the toy recalls by the US toy company, Mattel Inc. since summer over lead-contaminated surface paint, has had only limited impact on China's toy exports.

. . .

In the first ten months of the current year, Guangdong exported toys worth $4.94 billion, up 22.9 percent from the same period last year. About $3.92 billion, or 79 per cent of the total were exported to the US and the EU.

Posting article in GD because I am not sure The Information Company site is a valid LBN source.

Surprising news.

1. Could be because Mattel had to apologize to China?
In a surprising move, U.S. toy manufacturer Mattel apologized to China on Friday, taking responsibility for recent toy recalls and admitting they were due to "design flaws."

The Chinese manufacturers of the toys were not to blame for the massive recalls, a senior Mattel executive said during talks in Beijing.

and, it's also because 80% of the toys sold in the US are made in China, so non-Chinese stuff is hard to find.
