Calls in Sudan for Execution of Teddy Bear Teacher
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20071130/D8T82JV80.html

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) - Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam for allowing her students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."

The protesters streamed out of mosques after Friday sermons, as pickup trucks with loudspeakers blared messages against Gillian Gibbons, the teacher who was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in prison and deportation. She avoided the more serious punishment of 40 lashes.

They massed in central Martyrs Square outside the presidential palace, where hundreds of riot police were deployed. They did not try to stop the rally, which lasted about an hour.

"Shame, shame on the U.K.," protesters chanted.

They called for Gibbons' execution, saying, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad."

1. I think this Govt. better not only release this woman, but get her the hell out...
of the country before something does happen to her. If something does go seriously wrong, and harm does come to her, the Sudanese are not likely to be happy with the fall out.

24. ? You do realize that we have similar savages right here in this country....
I don't agree that all of those people believe in like manner, I have no doubt that perhaps some are scared to stop such ignorant behavior, not all is always as it seems.

2. By firing squad? How advanced!
That's quite progressive, for the Sudan. Allowing a teddy bear to be named "Mohamed" by the children, especially if any are females, isn't altogether bright, in that corner of the World.

3. The problem with this is I doubt that the teacher did this for any other...
reason other than ignorance! It would seem to me that it is very unlikely that she woke up one morning with the idea that she wanted to insult the muslim faith...

6. I think pretty much everyone agrees w/ that, it was ignorance
of Sudanese customs and culture, let alone the legal system, if any. Without international media attention.
I guess it comes down to, this teacher just got one hell of an education in her field of study!
I hope she gets out alive, and will write of her experiences.

The Sudan has been a cesspool of intollerance and hatred for so long. It's a shame that it takes irrational threats against a westerner for this to be in the media again, but the ignorance perpetuated in that country is staggeringly frightful!

20. Generally speaking, non-believers don't swarm in ecstatic fever calling for executions.
"Religious" people are calling for someone's murder/execution because of a perceived disrespect toward "religion". Is that simplistic enough for you?

As a gay man, I can tell you that the primary root of LGBT oppression is religion. From Fred Phelps to Pope Benedict XVI and every manipulative evangelical in between -- gay people are either defined as "intrinsically evil" or as an "abomination". You'll excuse me if I'm not buying into the "peace, charity and love" fallacy.

Nothing has polluted America's cultural and political landscape over the last 20+ years like "religion".

And your objection is about simplistic generalities? I'd say you're being a bit too sensitive.

21. That "fallacy" is the foundation of most religions
And the root of LGBT oppression is homophobia, an area in which religion does not corner the market.

30. Religion *is* the cultural institution responsible for homophobia.
But this isn't a thread about homophobia -- it about the heinous acts done in the name of religion.

In actuality, the foundations of religions are nothing more than a system of rituals and superstitions which attempt to control the uncontrollable.

48. It is not bigoted to state that people who believe 2+2=9 are morons
it is not bigoted to state that people who believe that trout live in trees are irrational

if people believe in imaginary made up childish bullshit, then that's their problem.

So you're slandering Dr King by suggesting that without Christianity, he would have been a moral vacuum? Or perhaps you're suggesting that he was NOT influenced by Thoreau? or that he wasn't influenced by Gandhi? Do you realize how dumb that is?

27. Another World...
The original charge against this British teacher was "inciting hatred of Islam," I think it was put, and was going to be 40 lashes, a horrific cruelty that might have killed the victim, and 6 months in prison, I think it was. After the uproar from other countries, against this barbaric sentence, it was lowered to the shortened sentence, and deportation after. The all-male protest groups, which no one is naming as all-male even though they are, in a country with vicious rules and laws against women, which almost no one is referring to, were not happy with the "moderate" response, and so now you have this.

What is odd about all this, is that I think the teacher, being from the modern West (perhaps she is a hated Christian), probably thought that naming a loved teddy bear after the founder of the religion was a tribute, and touching. Nobody, after all, is even mentioning that it was the kids themselves who named the teddy bear, not the teacher--they were no doubt doing it as a favorable gesture. I think the teacher had no idea whatsoever that this would have been considered a "hateful attack on Islam" or any other absurdity, until the lynch-mob violence erupted, and she was endangered. Whipping her to death or near-death, however, would not have incited any hatred against the cruel, male law of Islam whatsoever--not at all! This after all, is the area near Darfur, with genocide and ritual rape as a terror tactic, slavery and starvation. Brutal, Medieval cruelty and suffering.

Of course, leave it to the clueless, asshole atheists of DU to work it into an attack on Christians in the U.S., religion as a generality, and whatever else can be spun out of it. You did not quite grasp the problem of the story.

40. sudan's rather a mess isn't it?
the funny thing is quite a bit of thi can be traced to reactionary movements created in egypt and supported by the exportation of "troublemakers" from saudi arabia. and suddenly weak countries like saudi and egypt can parley other weak countries' populations into hysterical recruits for agitation and guerrilla war. it's a clever but dangerous business. unfortunately the fruits reaped tend to be, uh, rather unstable...

proxy wars, proxy wars, wealth, arms, 'n power... a very old game indeed.
