Clinton NH Campaign Hostage Situation thread #2
Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 03:05 PM by originalpckelly
Thread #1:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=2377226&mesg_id=2377226

Summary of situation:
A man in his 40s with salt and pepper hair walked into the Rochester, NH headquarters of the Hillary Clinton Presidential campaign, opened his overcoat and showed the volunteers there that he had a bomb strapped to his chest.

An eyewitness, apparently a lady in the headquarters at the time the suspect walked in, was released by the suspect so she would call 911.

The campaigns of Obama and Edwards in Rochester are located very close to the Clinton campaign headquarters, and they have been evacuated.

As of right now it is not precisely known how many people are being held. The swat team and the bomb squad have surrounded the headquarters and sharpshooters are on the scene.

The police are negotiating with the man, and reports claim he wants to talk with the Senator.

Clinton canceled her speech at the DNC fall meeting in Washington, D.C. as result of this incident.

UPDATE: Clinton campaign has issued a vanilla press release that doesn't give any new information, they will make further statements as thing develop. It also appears other campaigns have made statements about this. Will post links to statements as they become available.

Fox News is showing live footage of the rescue operation, typical Fox. Other networks are refusing to show it because they don't want to help out the hostage taker.

3. Strange day.
Clint V.Z. made an important point on MSNBC: the police will tell the fellow that they will not allow him to talk to Senator Clinton as long as he is holding hostages. However, they will be able to help him in other ways.

Smart man.

7. They talk just to fill air time...
I've found that the vast majority of the time they make no sense, or seem to have no idea what's coming out of their own mouths. It's like stream of consciousness. It probably saves them a ton on therapy.

Should she talk to every nut who takes hostages over the next 8 years? Hell no! It's a bad precedence. Anyone that would want to talk to her would just have to take some hostages.

54. I Have No Idea What The Situation Is, Nor Do You
The decision should be left to professionals, not politics. What you say may or may not be true, but when lives are on the line, she shouldn't fuck around and do what SHE thinks is best and I hope she's smart enough to realize that and listen to the professionals as she has indicated she will.

59. This is to me, at the same time outrageous, yet not too surprising.

This is what the level of discourse in this country has devolved into. The word that is used to describe Hillary, "polarizing" isn't just a word. It involves a really deep hatred. Many Americans (republicans) bought into the gigantic smear campaign perpetrated by the right wing conspiracy that sought to destroy the Clintons at any cost.

83. Whats sad is that the mental health of our citizens seem to have become taboo when it needs
so much more attention than it does. Reagan's administration begun the downhill attack on ensuring the mental health of our citizens take a back room and hide completely uncaring of them as if they are nothing more than a burden on society and therefore deserve no aid.

Or perhaps it is because they themselves wanted to ensure their own mental deficiencies were never discovered....I mean its more than obvious that many who are power these days are in desperate need of mental health addressing and that should terrify every single citizen of this country.

mom was transient with a car for years, and then without. At least she had access to money for apartments/motels so she wasn't technically homeless except for a few days over the course of 20 years.

She's in assisted living now and has bad dementia from strokes. Sad waste of a life.

I was agreeing with you. There are many possibilities. People should not conclude he is a harmless person who was denied treatment, though he could be. He might also have an anti-social personality disorder, and have attempted to avoid legal consequences from past misdeeds by trying to feign illness. Anything is possible.

has history of mental illness, reports his mother interacted with Mr. Stanley. Mr. Stanley claims to have a bug in his head, placed by the government.

This is taking warrantless wiretapping too far. :spank:

No, but seriously, it just looks like he's a nut, not a Republican nut.

Now it's a waiting game to see if all the other kookanuts out there do anything to copycat this man.
