The police in Podunk, NH tell Boston news outlets not to cover hostage taking
Hmm. So Boston news outlets are actually taking orders from the police in a jerkwater New Hampshire hamlet? What for? They've "requested" that the news copters stay at least three miles away. What the bloody f*ck for? Can anyone offer this ex-Boston rube a reasonable explanation as to why these small-town cops are able to dictate first-amendment rules to big-city news orgs?

Just curious. Mr. Cynic is working overtime today.

1. Because the national media is already there
so Boston viewers can get their news that way. As a MA resident, I say good. More news vans isn't going to create more news, the bloodsuckers can stay the fuck out and let the locals deal with it.

2. It's standard operating procedure not to give media attention to terrorists.
(I know - the Bush administration didn't get the memo.) Prior to 2001, most law enforcement and media outlets knew not to give terrorists like this media attention. It encourages copy-cats.

Uh thanks. As a resident of one of those jerkwater New Hampshire hamlets, I'd appreciate it if you kept your urbane sophistication the fuck outta dodge.

There are some of the stupidest rednecks in the country living in NH. Of course, many professionals are moving here now!

37. Especially in the southern towns of the state, like Rochester,
Most of them are former Mass residents.

42. Well, a litlte farthur south than that
Rochester is not that easily accessible from Mass (about an hour from Mass towns that border NH) so there are still a lot of NH originals there in my experience.

Most were transplants from Mass, one was a hometown boy.

And now I live in a jerkwater Connecticut 'burb.

Lighten up. If you indeed live in one such NH hamlet, you know a pickup truck and a flannel shirt are residency requirements. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

13. Do you know the difference between a western coyote and a CT coyote?
A western coyote sees a full moon and goes "OW-OW-OWHOOOOOOOOOO."

A Connecticut coyote sees it and goes "Oh my...ex-cellent moon!"

Try visiting Bridgeport, Waterbury, Hartford, and New London.

Fucking state (or should I say the wealthy fucks in the adjoining communities) can't support it's own citizens. No wonder I moved away from the fucking state. Goddam lieberman.

39. I have a weekend home "east of the river."
In the "quiet corner," in Woodstock. It's still pretty rural there, but the Providence and Boston people are moving in. Property values are going up...there's a new place being built every time we drive up there.

47. It's not that special
We've got a yurt, but it's all winterized with insulation and gas heat, kitchen, and I built a humongous 38' deck that wraps around half of it. It's nice to sit back in the trees a do the proverbial communing with nature. I actually traded the yurt with the manufacturer for some graphic design work. The deck is built on a lot of recycled materials, like a couple of old steel motor home frames for the support structure, and a tree I had to take down is used as a carrying beam. It's not like I have an actual second 'house' or anything. I could live there year 'round, but it'd pretty tough. I'd have to use all bottled water, and the access road doesn't get plowed. So we don't use it much once the snow starts.

21. Indeed it isn't.
And there are places in Connecticut that are about as rural as one can get in the northeast. Which is the point, I think. Rochester (that would be 'Podunk' in the OP) is in the seacoast region, one of the more progressive areas of NH, the CD that put Carol Shea-Porter in the House despite the best efforts of the DCCC to keep her down.

4. Probably standard procedure in situations like that. The perp could be communicating
with someone watching the news coverage and telling perp where snipers are and how many are there, etc.

Seems logical.

they are saying don't cover it. It is because police attempt to reduce stimulation during hostage crises. "News copters" increase the stimulation.

11. This is actually a commonsense police procedure. If the guy had
access to a TV we wouldn't want him to be able to see a live camera feed showing where all the SWAT team members were, would we???????

There's nothing the least bit unreasonable in the request.

Oh, you'll never guess who went ahead and showed the live footage anyway...

While MSNBC and CNN are being very careful not to show live footage in order not to tip off the hostage takers as to police strategy, Fox News is apparently showing live footage with realtime commentary on the strategy. Which side do you think the freepers are supporting?

Do you remember the hostage situation a few years ago in Salem MA? There was a breakin at the guy's house and he had his little twin boys home with him. The bad guy found out from Channel 7, which was on in the house, that the hostage was a prison guard at the Salem MCC. The TV people almost got the guy killed.

that the cops do not
want him to hear if

that once upon a time used to live on a little known tributary to the Connecticut river. Like the Cops in that town have never had to deal with standoffs before where keepng the media from beaming information directly to the hostage takers TV set was an issue.

26. If I recall correctly
some of the electronics used on helicopters can set off other electronics equipment, including unstable home-made bombs. It's part of the reason why cellphones have long been banned from airplanes. That doesn't hold true now so much in the age of digital electronics which cover most cellphones, but a home-made bomb is another situation.
