Evel Knievel Dies at 69
By MITCH STACY, AP

CLEARWATER, Fla. —
Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

35. My grandma used to say he was a hellion as a kid
She called him Ehvel. Oh she thought he was trouble, she used to tsk tsk about him. It was hilarious. I'm very sad about this. We used to drive by his house in Butte at Christmas because the lights were so over the top. They have a festival every year now, Evel Knievel Days. It's very popular.

7. Wow. Took that last big jump.
He was my older brothers' hero when I was a kid. They used to set up scrap-lumber and cinder-block ramps to imitate him on their bikes. Many injuries due to this man's influence!

23. My brother did one of those jumps too!
He went up the ramp on his bike, flew up into the air, came down and held it together long enough to hit an uneven spot of concrete on the sidewalk! He flew ass over applecart and landed right on his chin. Off to the ER we went again! Good thing our mom was a nurse and we sure kept her busy. Being the smart girl that I am, I always just sat on the lawn like a spectator laughing my ass off whenever he wiped out. LOL!

Thoughts and prayers for his family. All the boys, and some of the girls, in my neighborhood in the '70s used to try to imitate him by doing crazy jumps with their bikes and the like. This is sad.
