Insightful author interviews
Saturday 9 PM, Sunday 6 PM and 9 PM ET
In 1977 former President Richard Nixon sat down for a series of interviews with Sir David Frost. The eleven sessions aired worldwide and included the former president's thoughts on topics ranging from Vietnam to Watergate. In Frost/Nixon: Behind the Scenes of the Nixon Interviews Sir David recounts the preparation and execution required to produce the interviews and includes personal remembrances of his on and off camera conversations with President Nixon. Sir David discusses his book with Timothy Naftali, the director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.

Weekend Highlights
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bruce Miroff, The Liberals' Moment: The McGovern Insurgency and the Identity Crisis of the Democratic Party
Bruce Miroff documents George McGovern's presidential campaign of 1972 and the subsequent redesign of the Democratic party that the author contends took place following McGovern's defeat. Mr. Miroff argues that the Democratic base shifted from urban and blue collar to suburban and issue oriented. Bruce Miroff presents his book at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.
(Sunday 2:15 AM, 10 AM and 5 PM ET)
Diana West, The Death of the Grown-Up: How America's Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization
Diana West argues that Americans are in a state of perpetual adolescence that has its roots in the 1950s and 1960s. She contends that Americans have forgotten their cultural identity as a Western civilization and as a result are unable to recognize or act on the threat of Islamic terrorism. Ms. West talks about her book at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC.
(Saturday 10 PM, Sunday 7 AM ET)
Diana Walker, The Bigger Picture: 30 Years of Portraits
As a contract photographer for Time magazine, Ms. Walker has had access to the world's major political players and shares some of the stories behind her photographs in her latest compilation. In this discussion, Ms. Walker talks about the photographs she has taken of presidents, first ladies, political figures, business leaders, and her colleagues in the press.
(Sunday 4:30 PM and 10 PM ET)
Kay Bailey Hutchison, Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) talks about her book, which profiles the lives of sixty-three pioneering women in military service, journalism, public health, social reform, science, and politics. This event took place at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California.
(Sunday 7 PM, Monday 7 AM ET)
This week’s thread features the books that hooked us when we were little.
thanks for the other thread too. We were raised on some obscure books that were made for Indian kids (my mom got them at Haskell Indian School). I can't remember the names of them but I do remember that they didn't make it beyond the fifth kid.
16. I never read a childrens' book until I started babysitting.
There were very few books in the house. My mom had Ian Fleming spy novels and my grandma had a one volume encyclopedia in Spanish. Besides the phone book, that was it!
If it wasn't for my school library, I'd be eating kittens and listening to Rush.
28. "The Liberals' Moment: George McGovern," etc., by Bruce Miroff
I don't know if this is a good book or not--although the topic is fabulous and still important--because the author did not come across well as a speaker, yammered on and on, and did not give much information about the actual 1972 election or rules changes to the Democratic nominating or Primary process. The author seemed to still be of the annoying old opinion that "Republicans are so brilliant," "think tanks are so great," "they've got their message down pat, we need to do the same," "we need the same kinds of consultants they have," etc., etc.--the same attitude you used to read so often on DU even a couple of years ago. The theme of the talk seemed to be that the Democratic Party has drifted from its true message, lost its base, become more marginalized, etc., and that Republicans have capitalized so well on all this, (the author still seems to believe the routine that "America is not liberal," "Liberals are behind the times and need to catch up to where America is," etc.), making me think either that, the book was written before the landslide 2006 elections, where it swung so heavily back to us, or, the author is an asshole.
There is a lot of sloppy "media/consultant" jargon and group-think here, and the author refers to everything--from the New Deal to abortion rights--as "liberal," not helpful, and also did not give much real information on the great George McGovern, apart from the argument of the book. McGovern was such a great public servant that, as an often real left-winger, McGovern was re-elected term after term in a very Republican area, by being such a responsive, honest and truly populist legislator; someone who really went back home and listened to the people, a lot.
Some problems of the talk, which may or may not be in the book-telling, are that the author Bruce Miroff does not appear to understand, and does not make distinctions, between the Democratic Party, and these usurping groups like the "D"LC, quoting this Al From prick as a representative of a current "Democratic Party" opinion at one point. Many of the criticisms of what Democrats need to do--get back to fundamental and universal concerns about the economy, for example, are out-of-date, as people have been doing that for a few years now, and even now wanting the "consultants" thrown out. The effect of the criminality and "dirty tricks," as they were rightly called, of the Nixon campaign, was not really gone into, although it may be--better be--covered in the book. The author names several Clinton Administration types, as "McGovernites," a questionable claim, as McGovern was such a true populist servant of the people, and the others are paid corporate lobbyist hacks. The change of the Democratic Party, right up to the current state, and what we should or should not do, (and so much of the current situation did start with the 1972 McGovern campaign, Republican criminality as a campaign tactic, and the official rules changes of many kinds), is an interesting and important topic. I don't know if this author really got it, though; so much of this was the same old "Republicans are so brilliant, let's do what they do" crap--and after they are sinking completely into "poll approval ratings" hell! Kind of a disconnect there.
McGovern fought for a progressive tax structure, raised taxes on the kinds of things that only apply to the richest people--estate taxes, luxury, corporate, stock, transfers of various kinds, etc.--and for increased help for poor people, and was one of the earliest feminists, I remember this. (The author referred to feminists, who were "quite militant then," I think it was put. Dumb shit.) I don't know if this is the right person and book, for this great, important topic. You may want to try reading it--the change from middle class economic issues, to more "suburban" as the author put it (whatever that means) issue/groups as a Platform emphasis, is really interesting, but I actually think here, as happens so often, that the people yet again are way ahead of the "highly-paid official thinkers." Regardless, if this is a real tribute to the thinking of George McGovern, then it should be read for that reason alone.
34. "After Words: David Frost"; "Frost/Nixon"
This was really great; really enjoyable, smart, enthralling, fun, witty. If you remember the '60s and '70s, you might remember the really great talk show David Frost had then, or maybe the first political satire "news" program, "That Was the Week That Was," which my parents loved. You probably then also remember the series of 3 interviews Frost managed to get with Richard Nixon, when Watergate was still current and contemporary, and people were still seething mad, demanding answers, justice, and wondering if Nixon would ever admit anything or apologize. These interviews were then done in this tense, angry atmosphere. This whole "After Words" program was a reminder of David Frost's deep and rangy intelligence, wit and humor, and very sensitive and perceptive descriptions of much of Richard Nixon's psychology and behavior. Very touching, a lot of it. This was a wonderful program--I taped it.
