HDTV puzzle, delayed signal..........??
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 02:32 PM by karlrschneider
Sorry to do this in GD but the only other forum having anything to do with TV seems to be mostly dead: We're watching
bowl games today and noticed when we put both TVs (the new HD and the old analog) on the same station, the
signal on the HD runs about a second later than the other one! :wtf: What the heck is causing this?

edit: both audio and video, not a 'sync' thing...

1. Do you notice the time lag only when you turn on the analog TV?
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 02:33 PM by Rabrrrrrr
That is, when you turn on the analog, does the digital TV have a noticable slowdown and then run a second behind?

Or does it have no noticable slowdown, and run a second behind?

If the latter - which is what I imagine - it means your HD is always running about a second behind, which would make some sense - it's doing a lot of math to the signal coming in, and I'm sure (though HypnoToad would be the one to ask) that HDTV makers were smart enough to know they needed a signal buffer. One second would seem to be about what is called for.

If the HDTV has a noticable lag as soon as you turn the Analog one on, then I'm stumped.

2. It's not just HD.
I have an analog TV in my bathroom (straight cable, no box) and I have a digital (but not HD) TV in my bedroom on a digital cable box. Sometimes there is barely a difference in the timing of the signal and other times, the digital TV is several seconds behind the analog TV. We have HD downstairs and there's a difference between that signal and the digital upstairs, though it's harder to determine because they're further apart.

3. Analog signals are generally..
.... real time, whereas digital signals go through all kinds of processing where they get delayed.

5. Are they both on a cable box?
I've noticed the TVs I have hooked up to a box are delayed. The bathroom wall-mounted TV has no box and seems to run a second ahead even though it is hooked to the same cable system.

10. No, directly off the air - antenna! I can see a difference if it was a satellite feed but
these are both tuned to the same station and its transmitting antenna. It's not a problem really, I just wonder what the heck causes it...
:P

6. It's all about conversions
The signal has to be converted to digital, transmitted and then recoverted to analog for broadcast. All those conversion take time. Anolog signals don't have all that processing, so they are quicker.

11. Yeah, lots of funny stuff happens with cable...a lot of satellite hops can get involved
but this is a direct shot over the air from the transmitter 11 miles away...I guess it must have to do with the digital conversion but a second seems like a LONG time to me............;-)

14. Nope, Same problem in a sports bar I frequent....
All new large flat screens and all on sattelite receivers. When the first two at the bar were configured for HD they had the same A/V lag. They chose to disable the HD to the two sets rather than upgrade the other dozen.....
