Just say "no" to racist and sexist campaigning
I'm serious. I don't want to hear about some crotchety old person saying "I won't vote for no colored person." Fuck them. I don't want to hear about some redneck asshole hillbilly saying "I won't vote for no woman." Fuck them too.

It ain't about skin color, gender, or where someone's parents came from. It's about the ISSUES--who will fight for the future of the United States and the future of the human race. If someone has a problem with Obama because he's black--tough shit.

"If you can judge a wise man by the color of his skin, mister, you're a better man than me."

And anyone who thinks a woman isn't up to the job, that just because she's a woman she'll be a pushover needs to go through a divorce and/or custody battle. Pushover my ass. Dimwits. A woman can hand out an ass-kicking guys can't even imagine until they've gone through it.

So, if you don't want to support an African-American or a woman candidate for President, that's fine. But just say it in your own words. "I don't want to support an African American for President. I don't want to support a woman for President." Don't hide behind someone else's words.

I'm supporting neither Obama nor Clinton, but it has nothing to do with gender or race. It's because they're not speaking to the issues I think are the most important. Had they done so, I would be whole-heartedly supporting one or the other of them.

So don't tell me that Obama isn't electable because of his race. I don't know that, and I daresay neither do you. And don't tell me Hillary's not electable because she's a woman. That's nothing more than conjecture, and I reject it.

If you tell me that it's because Clinton is too cozy with a bad element, I'll buy that. If you tell me that Obama comes across as too trusting of Republican goodwill (as if they actually HAVE any) I might buy that too.

But to make it about race, or gender?

Oh, fuck that noise.

3. Thank you. I am so SICK of people on DU...

... TELLING ME (they NEVER ASK me...) WHY I don't support Hillary.

They contend that it's because she's a woman. THAT is a load of horse manure. Are these DUers MIND-READERS? They seem to think they are!

I dislike NAFTA and Hillary supports it. I dislike that she gets TREMENDOUS amounts of money from big corps and their lobbyists and THAT does not sit well with me. SHE gets more money from them than ALL the other candidates - Ds and Rs. She voted for the IWR and has NEVER acknowledged that that vote was WRONG, even though it obviously was. She wants to keep troops in Iraq indefinitely...I could go on... I dislike her policies and proposed policies and a good bit of her past record and where her money comes from.

Now...

That said, I don't much care for PEOPLE DEFINING ME: telling ME what I think, who I am, how I am, what my motives are, why I support someone -- or WHY don't support someone else. Ever-so oddly, the people who do this: THEY NEVER ASK ME what I think - they TELL me.

Interesting....

And these supposed mind-readers on DU - have never even MET me! What incredible egos they must have to ASSume they can read the minds of other DUers they've never met and whom they don't know from Sam. Good heavens.

They truely need to GET OVER THEMSELVES.

:wtf:

NOT ONLY do I say NO to racist or sexist campaigning, but I also say NO to being DEFINED by other people regarding who I do or do not support - to being TOLD what I think instead of ASKED.

IF ANYONE WANTS TO KNOW why I don't/do support anyone they can ASK. But don't TELL ME who/what/how/why I am for or against anyone. I CAN SPEAK FOR MYSELF.

It's not up to other people to DEFINE me or to decide what I think. THAT'S MY JOB!

And HERE is what I think: I don't give a rat whether a candidate is black or female. If I don't like their record or their policies / platform, or where a lot or all of their money comes from, then THAT is what I look at - NOT whether they have a penis or brown skin. MY priorities are are on a higher level than that and I feel truely sorry for anyone who uses race or sexual criteria as a deciding factor in who to vote for or support.

4. You may not want to acknowledge the very strong probability that
neither Obama nor Hillary is electable in 2008. As a black man from Arkansas, I definitely understand why you'd like to believe they are viable. Unfortunately, America as a whole, particularly the South and Middle of the country is probably not as open minded as we all would like. And for 2008, can Democrats take the chance that the Electorate is NOT as progressive as we NEED them to be so they would be WILLING to vote for either of them?

Remember, reality is a bitch. It just is, and we can all wish the US was not racist or sexist or bigoted against non-christians. I wish Americans weren't so shallow every single day of my life, but I keep getting disappointed.

5. Reality doesn't change until we make it so.
Constantly putting out this negative bullshit doesn't do anyone any service.

I'm the most cynical black woman I know, but we will not end 200+ years of old white men in the White House by capitulating to the perceived shallowness of the electorate.

Dare to dream. One day, people might surprise you.

6. Ma'am, I don't care about ending 200+ yrs of white men in the White House

I want to win the damn election. Too much is at stake for All Americans of every ethnic group and gender/orientation, not to mention around the Earth! This is NOT a referendum on the social acceptance of America. History does matter. I have just one question...Are you willing to increase the odds of waking up Wed, November 5th, and find President-Elect Romney or McCain? If so, I have no words...

11. I strongly disagree with you
America is ready for a woman. And it is ready for a black.

Hillary is struggling because of her issues and her personality, not her sex.

Obama's magnetism resonates in White Iowa. So I have a hunch it will resonate elsewhere as well.

What I see here on DU are people who don't like Hillary and/or Obama and "innocently" saying they don't have anything against them but....May as well say, some of my best friends are....

Fact of the matter is what they are wanting us to do is NOT NOMINATE someone ON THE BASIS OF RACE. Of course, blaming it on the big bad Republicans for cover.

This is morally no different than a parent telling her daughter....you know, I don't have anything against blacks and I know you are in love, but you better not get serious about that guy because what will the neighbors think....

7. Will people vote for Sen Clinton or Obama BECAUSE they are (skin color/gender)/
I am curious. I wish I supported Ms.Clinton BECAUSE I would love to get a woman in the presidential position. Same for Obama BECAUSE he has brown skin. I would love to have the presidency opened to all, even all genders or skin colors.

12. The Game Changes After The Primaries
Who knows...maybe DU will be a lot different place by then, but I would hope most Democrats and Independents who give a shit about this country will put the inter-party battles behind and unite to beat the biggest threat to our republic...4 more years of a Repugnican Executive. Every Democratic candidate on their worst day is far superior to any Repugnican on their best.

Damn right if Obama or Clinton are the candidates that they'll use the race and gender cards. Anyone who thinks the GOOP won't do all they can to slime whatever candidate they oppose must be living under a rock for the past 20 years. If it's not true, they'll make it up...it doesn't matter. Look at the shit the Huckster is trying to do to Mittens...an example of the dirty tricks awaiting any Democrat.

My hopes are the GOOP does target race and gender this year...as well as other "targets of opportunity" such as Hispanics, Gays and the Middle Class. This tactic would be a great gift to Democrats as it would not only help unite our side in outrage, but also turn off all but the core xenophobes in the GOOP. This primary season has forced the GOOP to the extreme, cliff-hanging right...our goal should be to help push them over the abyss.
