They generate their own "importance" because the MSM assbags say they are important. This artificial importance then translates into artificial momentum for the next media-hyped election event. And so it goes.

8. The previous poster said it. They are first. That's really the only reason.

The other reason I've heard is because they are small, meaning that it makes the playing field a little more level for candidates who may not have the support of big money interests or a large wallet. Jimmy Carter is one example. He won Iowa and eventually went to win the White House.

However, I don't consider that an argument in favor of keeping Iowa and New Hampshire in their current place. That's an argument in favor of campaign finance reform.
