2. It's also very rural, as is another state voting soon. Want some focus on urban issues

too bad, rural whites make these decisions for us.

4. I'm from an Iowa manufacturing town. Losing jobs, large minority population, major university
but still less than 100,000 population.

We're not all rural by heritage.

8. Sounds like my town in NH.
A little over 100,000. NH is quite rural, too, but it's not all rural. In the last election, Manchester voted Republican while the rest of this rural state voted Democratic.

6. If he gets nominated, I don't think Southern states will vote for Obama, so Repugs will probably win

9. no matter which dem is nominated we're not going to take
southern states- with the exception of VA, which we stand a good chance of taking. And we don't need those states to win. Obama is competitive as the nominee.

Lest anyone thing I believe Obama is going to slash and burn his way through the South, I don't. But the South is in transition; right now, it's still solidly white men-folk in the driver's seat with their wimmen cheerfully accepting their down-and-in-a-world-of-shit status. It won't be forever, possibly not even for more than another election cycle. Too many people moving in (including the dreaded Brown Folk--they can't vote, but their US-born kids can); and too many middle-class African Americans asserting themselves.

11. "southern states" like Virginia, who've already elected a black man Gov.?
like, almost twenty years ago? Those southern states?

What scares the living crap out of White Southren Menfolk (as opposed to, well, rational people who may or may not be male living 'round these parts) is that the 25-30% of the population of some Southern states that happen to be African-American ALL decide it's time to get out and vote.

If you had anything like the percentage of hyper-motivated White Southren Menfolk voting among black Southerners, it'd probably be a bloodbath. And these pig-ignorant fuckers know it, which is why they cling to stupid shit like the GA Voter ID act, in the desperate hopes that they can knock off a couple of points by disenfranchising these voters.

14. Between 1980 and 1992, the number of Hispanics in 10 midwestern states
-- Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska -
climbed from 1.2 million to 1.8 million -- including about 1 million Hispanics in Illinois. Over the same period, the white population in these states declined by 400,000.

18. No. The increase is not all in the cities.
Here are a couple of examples. (By the way, the Nebraska town cited in the first article is on I-80, and about 15 years ago experienced an enormous influx of Latino immigrants.) It's not only cities. The face of rural America in changing, as also well documented in Eric Schlosser's fine book, "Fast Food Nation."

13. Shows that even the much derided by usbig city progressives rural-
types can rise above when the our progress is on the line.

Obama's not my favorite, far from it, but Iowans spoke and I think we need to listen, even if they barely nodded to my guy Biden.
