Why is "red" a rightwing adjective these days?

Tim Russert just described the situation in Iowa as a huge turnout of Democrats in a "Red" State (meaning conservative)....

Wasn't "red" an indicator of leftwing politics?

7. Yes, the designations changed about 20-25 years ago.

Do a Wiki on presidential election results and you will see the color change sometime in the 80's.

9. I don't know. In almost every other country, red usually meant left wing or left wing-like

Then again, in America "liberal" has the opposite connotation that it does in many countries in Europe and Australia. There, "liberal" is synonymous with the right wing, such as former John Howard of the Liberal Party in Australia, a right wing party.
