My dad supports Ron Paul.
When I ask him why he says "because too much government control is bad news". Ok, so far so good, but for some reason he seems to think that Fred Thompson is a socialist. Can anyone explain this? Is he simply uninformed or is there something about Thompson's platform that could make him seem like a socialist to someone?

1. Well, Thompson is a member of the Screen Actors Guild...
(I assume)

Maybe, if your dad is a Ron Paul supporter, he thinks all union members are socialists?

11. That actually makes some twisted sense. Otherwise, I can't grasp the concept at all.

2. I heard people say DLC-candidate Kerry was a communist.
So anything is possible...

3. Yeah and people have been pretending the Hillary Clinton are further left than Mao for years
Delusions of the sort are common enough, unfortunately. Particularly when we all know Hillary Clinton is further right than Mussolini.

5. The problem is - they're not pretending
A lot of them are so brainwashed that they think Hillary is really this radical left-wing monster and that the Democratic Party in general is way, way, way to the left of where it was in the 1960s.

7. That's true - a lot of the base cleary believes that
I guess i think the leadership is the one doing the pretending.

10. I agree
I think most of the leadership is phony through & through - led by Bush. I think the whole "born again" spiel with him was an act calculated to get the fundies in a fervor over him.

Huckabee, on the other hand, might actually be sincere in his belief that the world is 6,000 years old and that women should graciously submit to their hubby's leadership.

8. He thinks bush is comical and that someone had to get it after 9/11. He's simple in this regard.

9. Tell your dad Thompson doesn't have the energy
to be a socialist. I've seen socialists at anti-war marches. There's no way the old guy could ever keep up.

13. I suppose you could ask him about Thompson
Sort of a radical suggestion, I know. As for the Ron Paul thing, I'd advise looking into nice, quiet nursing homes where he can work on his mah jongg skills.

15. I just talked to my dad. I think his support of Ron Paul is an act of frustration.
When I asked him why he supports Ron Paul he said something like: "Well the rich people are going to do what they want any g**-damn way, so we might as well have no government control over anything."

17. Ron Paul is a walking protest vote. His support is only a demonstration of
Republican dissatisfaction with their choices, and nothing more.

16. Ron Paul is not in favor of unintrusive government. He opposed Lawrence v. Texas.
While he correctly believes that the Federal government does not have the right to intrude on your personal life, he also strongly believes that individual states do have the right to snoop between your sheets.
