17. Your name is famous!
OK, even more so than before...

Did you see this today?

Elizabeth Edwards introduced her husband as the Seabiscuit of the Democratic race and the candidate quickly embraced the metaphor. "On Tuesday we're going to surprise American" he said, referring to next week's primary.

I saw it.

I think it's kind of funny. I may have started the whole "Seabiscuit" thing in politics back in 2003. At the time I was a Deaniac and posting on DFA. After seeing the movie "Seabiscuit" that summer I wrote a post there about how Howard Dean reminded me of Seabiscuit: short of stature, representing hope for the downtrodden and the common man, challenging War Admiral (Bush) to a race etc., etc., so I changed my name to "Seabiscuit for Dean" on the DFA blog. It was through the DFA blog that I discovered DU, so that by the time I actually began posting here in May, 2004, I signed up as "Seabiscuit".

Now everyone in politics seems to be fighting over that name. I saw a thread earlier today where someone said Kerry was Seabiscuit, then someone else said Kucinich was, someone else said it was now Edwards, and when I mentioned Howard Dean everyone ignored me.

If it were up to me to lend my handle to someone right now I'd have to, in good conscience, give it to John Edwards, because he, like Seabiscuit, deserves a second chance.

20. That's fasinating
You have a great story there to tell the grandkids. It also is a good example of how things can spread and morph as they do.

the grandkids, if I live long enough (I was put out to stud many moons ago.) :)

I wonder if they'll believe me. If I were to start a thread about it on DU, in the current political climate, I'd probably be flamed to death, called every name in the book, including the "liar" name. Especially if they noticed my Edwards avatar.

9. Exactly how are these volunteer callers vetted?
What is to stop someone from signing up to screw Edwards? As a volunteer, you can be dismissed for inappropriate actions but reaching the level of election fraud would be tough. None the less, the damage would be done.

What are the safeguards?

Being in Texas doing things like this is the closest I get to really feeling as if I'm actually involved in choosing our next president.
