Elizabeth Edwards To Chris Matthews And Rest Of Media: Ahem -- John And I Are Still Here
January 5, 2008 -- 2:45 PM EST

One of the things I'd been wondering was whether John Edwards' slim victory over Hillary for second-place in Iowa would shift the media dynamic of the race and get people to cover it as more of a three-way contest. In general terms, it's already obvious that the answer is No.

On this score, I'd really be remiss if I didn't share with you these wonderful quotes from Elizabeth Edwards on Hardball, where she chastised Chris Matthews and the rest of the political media for slighting her man.

First, Elizabeth was asked whether John would be able to survive if Barack Obama won both Iowa and New Hampshire. She observed that John had come in second in Iowa in 2004, that he had gotten short-shrifted in coverage then, and that this was happening again:

ELIZABETH EDWARDS: ...we had the "Dean scream" in `04, which sort of made second place, which John had -- not mean as much because you all covered that, as opposed to the second-place finish.

Now, of course, you`re covering Hillary`s third-place finish instead of John`s second-place finish. So we`re still fighting against you guys.

At another point, Matthews and Elizabeth had this exchange:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: I don`t know how John Edwards wins this thing as long as those two are fighting for the nomination. They seem to get in the way. Doesn`t one of them have to get knocked out?

ELIZABETH EDWARDS: If knocking -- if John`s finishing second isn`t enough to get him in the conversation with you guys, yes, we have to knock one of those two off in order to get him into the conversation.

Great, great stuff. Elizabeth's short-lived career as a media nudge has been one of the more entertaining -- and salutary -- sideshows of Campaign 2008.

1. EE was nothing short of terrific. Two person contests are cheaper to cover.
That maximizes corporate profits.

And that's what it's all about.

2. Elizabeth will make a wonderful First Lady if John becomes
President. This is no Steppford wife here like the card board cutout that we presently have as First Lady. I like the fact that she fights back and maybe even talks out of turn. She is a great role model for being a supportive spouse without having to lose her self identity in the process.

3. She is bloody fantastic, I just love her....
I am so so sick of hearing she should shut up and sit down, BUT Michelle Obama is just the cats pajamas. WHY should Elizabeth shut up, but Mrs. Obama rock the house??? I am sorely missing something here. I even heard Mrs. Obama on CNN play a slight race card, which really surprised me.

ALL of that aside, as a breast cancer survivor myself, I find EE one of the bravest, strongest people I have ever seen, because I know what goes into breast cancer treatment. I'm going through radiation right now. I'm exhausted from chemo, surgeries, radiation and having my mom recovering from a stroke. HOW does she go through a presidential campaign with children AND cancer treatment?? How strong an one person be?

All that aside, I totally agree, the MSM is a disgrace. I am sick to death of hearing ObamaClintonObamaClinton. And nothing but a death knoll for John Edwards. Good Lord imagine if he came in THIRD????

Good on her for giving it to Tweety.

5. This Biden supporter says -
GO GET THEM ELIZABETH!!!

Don't let them do to Edwards what they did to Biden and Dodd.

I am 100% with you. The media should not be picking out President.

12. Another Biden supporter agrees
Yep, I saw this and she was awesome. I preferred Biden but it's not fair that Edwards is just labeled the "angry" guy now. Can we please have more than a word or phrase to label a candidate? I'm pretty cynical, esp. now, but even I think Americans might be able to handle 2 or 3 sentences!

Then him trying to deflect it by saying she has a nice smile and face? Yuk.

I'll never forgive CM for interviewing Biden on Pakistan in wake of Bhutto's death and then blathering about how this would really send people to Clinton.

10. If I didn't know better I would think Edwards has dropped because the GD Corporate Media isn't
mentioning him at all. It's all Obama/Hill all the time! :argh: Do these corporate media whores think we aren't noticing this? He comes in second and gets dissed. Everyone should be pissed about this, whether you're and Edwards supporter or not. The corporate owned media is picking who they want this primary race too be about. Why should we stand for it?

She looked strong and health, too. She'd be a great first lady. Michelle, too. Bill, not so much.
