Political mudslinging as a campaign tactic is as popular as it's ever been. Romney, Clinton, Huckabee,
Giuliani, Obama - no one's managed to steer clear of targeted rumors and malicious gossip. NOW on PBS
travels to South Carolina, the home of legendary no-holds-barred campaigner Lee Atwater, to see where
negative stories come from, how they spread, and whether they can be effectively defeated with positive messaging.

"In South Carolina, we know how to run negative campaigns," Rod Shealy, a veteran campaign strategist
who was convicted for violating campaign laws, tells NOW. "Your challenge as a campaign is to damage
your opponent without getting caught doing it."

Will political smears influence the result of the 2008 election?

Mitt Romney Teams Up With Warren Tomkins in South Carolina

http://stephencrosehome.blogspot.com/2008/01/mitt-romney-teams-up-with-warren.html

According to PBS's weekly Now, the ghost of Lee Atwater is alive in South Carolina and teaming up
with Mitt Romney to see if the sorts of slurs that brought McCain down in the dirty Bush campaign
in 2000 will rub off on Obama and Clinton -- whoever turns out to be the one he needs to beat.

We're talking Warren Tomkins and the only hope we now have is a little advance time to make this
guy a household word so he is unable to power the smear that will bring down hope.

The way to fight this kind of fire is with plenty of warning until he becomes nationally known
as the guy Mitt wants to use to accomplish what he cannot do via respectable political means.

Don't go to the PBS Dirty Politics front page to find the name of Warren Tomkins.
It's buried in the telecast.

INSURANCE SCAM LATEST EXAMPLE OF CONSULTANT’S UNETHICAL DEALINGS

http://www.fitsnews.com/2007/10/14/another-warren-tompkins-scandal/

FITSNews - October 14, 2007 -

It’s shaping up to be quite a couple of weeks for veteran GOP consultant Warren Tompkins, the
ethically-compromised lead S.C. strategist for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Only a month
after Tompkins’ firm was busted operating an anonymous attack website targeting GOP presidential
candidate Fred Thompson, Tompkins now finds himself at the center of another brewing political
scandal, this one involving millions of taxpayer dollars.

Reporter Dan McCue of the Charleston Regional Business Journal has labored to produce a brilliant
piece of investigative journalism highlighting Tompkins’ connection to a multi-million dollar state
insurance contract that hasn’t been competitively bid in 19 years - a cozy backscratching relationship
that has cost South Carolina taxpayers millions of dollars a year.

Get ready for the 'swift boating' to commence in earnest!! Tighten your seatbelts!

1. SC Bad Boys Go National - January 5, 2008 - video link

FITSNews - January 5, 2008 -

In case you missed http://www.fitsnews.com/sic-willie-2/">Sic Willie’s big national television debut last night, he was pretty much fat, bald and uninteresting. In fact, we’re pretty sure after this video airs, his chances of ever getting laid again are about the same as the Cubbies ever winning another World Series.

Anyway, if you want to watch the NOW on PBS national TV special about “dirty politics” in South Carolina, CLICK HERE. It’s actually a pretty nifty piece of TV journalism - especially the part where veteran SC consultant Rod Shealy claims to be a “reformed bad boy” and insists that his 1990 hiring of an unemployed black fisherman to frighten whites into voting for his sister “was not a scare tactic.”

Sure thing, Rod.

Of course the SC consultant who takes it the furthest up the yin-yang in the half-hour special is former GOP kingmaker and campaign 2000 http://www.fitsnews.com/2007/12/30/echo-chamber-eight-years-later-the-truth/">smearmeister Warren Tompkins, who declined to comment for the piece. Of course after you watch it, we think you’ll see why …
