it's been going on all day!!

First it was Bill; then Huck and now Mrs. Obama!

It's tiresome and last night it was ALL the DEM candidates (that were allowed to debate!)

It's already been posted on the board... what's going on on C-Span today - right now.

23. Oh, sure. make fun all you want. But as someone who has had to eat caviar without capers...
my heart bleeds for McCain.

We'll see if you laugh, when one day your family has to eat their caviar with crackers instead of melba toasts.

It'll make the day they banned Iranian caviar, and we had to get by on Russian caviar, look like a limo ride through the park.

6. Let's face it, nobody was born to a shoeless sharecropper or welfare queen.
Mittens and McCain were priveleged, but the rest were various shades of middle class. Boring, but true.

11. What do you consider middle class?
Certainly, Sen. Clinton was middle class--she grew up in a nice (or what was nice then) Chicago suburb.

Edwards's dad was a blue collar worker in what was probably a series of non-union mills. His mom did what she could. His start sounds like mine, and believe me, my family wasn't middle class back then. It sounds as though his father eventually got to the top of the blue collar heap, and probably achieved a lower middle class situation at some point.

I'm less clear on how much money was around with Obama, but his grandfather was a furniture salesperson. My guess would be lower middle class with aspirations since his Mom went to college.

What's your background?

14. Neither of my parents went to college or made much money, so I suppose
I'm working-class--grew up in typical modest middle-America suburbs. Financial struggles at times, but had a roof over my head, and clothes on my butt, and a stable loving home, and food in my belly, and presents at Christmas, and color TV, and my own room. I don't feel that I was ever at a disadvantage in life.

9. I think you misunderstood the reference
They all have Humble beginnings

Humble Oil and Refining Company was founded by Ross Sterling in 1909. Sterling later became Governor of Texas. Of course, Humble Oil became Exxon in the middle 1960's and the Exxon Production Research building on Buffalo Speedway bears the cornerstone reading "Humble Oil and Refining Company".

13. You're Right... I was born rich and will die poor because I choose to live my life with integrity
and never bought into the axioms, "Do unto others to get ahead" and "You have to give up your principles if you're going to make it in this world".

My vote goes to Kucinich. If the Texas Democratic Party succeeds in keeping Dennis off the Texas primary ballot, I will vote for Edwards.

28. Humble beginnings? I'll tell ya about humble beginnings...
I had to walk 3 miles to school in chest high snow, backwards and that was just summer! And that was when school was in session 9 days a week! You don't want to even hear about the winter...but I'll tell you anyway. We had so much snow, that they only way to get in the house was through the chimney! And if we couldn't find the chimney, we had to find a wolfs den to keep warm!

42. My family was not only poor but also large
There were six of us kids, two girls and four boys. There was never enough money, so at Christmas the girls would each get a cheap doll, in order for us boys to have something to play, with our parents cut the bottoms out of our pants pockets.

29. I was born poor and I stayed poor... and you know what?
I don't want to get rich. Yep, that's right, I said I don't want to get rich. Is that even possible in America? To lack a desire to have a lot of money? The media would have us believe it isn't.

Actually having enough money to get by would be nice. But I have no desire whatsoever for any more than 30-40k per year. That would be a fortune to me - more than enough. Right now I make 7k on SSI.

35. well most people who come from humble roots, make it to middle class america at best
(not their fault, the odds are highly stacked against people becoming wealthy)

the candidates have clearly moved far away from their roots, so it makes sense to be that they allude to their beginnings.

they just want us to remember that they were not always wealthy.

i dont see the problem with that.

37. As Bob Dylan said about politicians..

“Now, the man on the stand he wants my vote,
He's a-runnin' for office on the ballot note.
He's out there preachin' in front of the steeple,
Tellin' me he loves all kinds-a people.
(He's eatin' bagels
He's eatin' pizza
He's eatin' chitlins
He's eatin' bullshit!)”

43. Here's one for my ideal candidate, his theme song.
This guys life was more than a poor boy who made it big. His life made him so ugly...

GROWN SO UGLY
anonymous

I got up this morning
And I put on my shoes
I tied my shoes
Then I washed my face
I went to the mirror
For to comb my head
I made a move
Didn't know what to do
I tipped way forward
Got to break and run

Baby, this ain't me
Baby, this ain't me
Got so ugly I don't even know myself

I left Angola
1964
Go walking down my street
Knock on my baby's door
My baby come out
She asks me who I am
And I say, honey,
Don't you know your man?
She said my man's been gone
Since 1942
And I'll tell you Mr. Ugly,
He didn't look like you
