How did you find DU?
In my case, It was 2002 and I was getting revved for the legislative races. I literally, just for the hell of it, Googled the keywords Democrats and underground. I was looking for a site that was Party oriented* but decidedly NOT official.

Lo and behold!

I had no idea whatsoever this place existed but I clicked on the first result I got, started reading, began to laugh, and signed up maybe five minutes later.

I was here to celebrate the 32,000th member!

*and accidentally found one that was "little p" party oriented, too--the Lounge...

5. PATS!
How are YOU?

I found DU when http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all&q=sabra+halliburton+site%3Ademocraticunderground.com">sabra posted about the http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=halliburton+david+smith">news stories regarding my Halliburton efforts in 2006. We were monitoring the coverage very carefully for provably false rebuttals from Halliburton, and sabra's post came up.

LBN and the formation of the groups in 2004 helped keep me after the election -- GD was just too painful.

I signed up through my job's computer in '01? or '02! :P

I tried to keep in touch at the library but it wasn't plausible.

But had to re-register after that job went the way of the winds,
as in, moved out of state and now, out of the country, I think.

On second edit: I worked at that job in 1999 and 2000!
So I must have signed up here at that time!

I wish I still had all that info! ;)

I was on a fishing website, one of their forums was similar to the DU Lounge where anything goes. The topic under discussion at that particular time was politics. One redneck didn't like what I had to say so he told me 'you ought to be posting in DemocraticUnderground' rather derisively. I checked it out just to see what he was talking about. Lurked for a while and have been here about five years now. If I knew who that redneck was I'd thank him profusely.

145. Myself included
I am on the mailing list of "the best of the web" from the WSJ. And one of them mentioned DU, with a link, of course. I think that it was a story about the difficulties that we will have encouraging our kids to excel at school, after a C student - Bush - is the President. This may have happened around January 2004, just as the primaries started and this was a great place to find out about the candidates. Also, I used to be active on another message board dedicated to a specific public issue but on occasions would slip to politics, where the majority were, are, RWers. So this was such a nice change, to be able to talk about Democrats and to to face constant attacks.

And in many cases I would seek information to rebut idiots on RW boards and was always rewarded.

46. I found it to be quite refreshing.
Seems to me it was around 9/11. I googled "democratic messageboard" looking for a site with like minded folks and when I got to DU. I checked the mission statement or whatever and it mentioned that it was a site for Democrats or progressives. Since I was not really a Democrat per se (was not a Republican either, considered myself independent), I still thought I'd dig it here. Lurked until about 2003 when I finally signed up and started posting.

Despite the fact that I sometimes really have a hard time with the partisanship prevalent here, I still come back everyday.

58. Unique story...
I've been a Freeper my entire life...then one day I woke up and questioned everything I thought I knew. I started thinking for myself (what a novel concept). I work in a very, very right-wing dominated environment and I remember one day some guys at work talking about those "left-wing nut jobs" and I noticed they were viewing DU. So naturally, when I realized I was a progressive democrat, I went straight to DU!!! :pals:

Glad to "see" ya! :hi:

I came from republican family, was still republican when I married into the military (actually I wasn't really paying attention). It was the hunting of Bill Clinton that actually "woke" me up to the fact that I was not a Republican. I became active because of the 2000 election. (knew Bush was an evil kind of stupid). But I didn't find DU till 2003 when I began researching '04 candidates.

However, one of their posts mention something called Democratic Underground, so I googled that and I've been around here ever since.

81. I was within the first 10,000 members.
Shortly after the 2000 election, I found myself on a newspaper's message board fighting with dimwitted Libertarians. If you can believe it, when I made a salient point in one debate, one of the asshats started hitting on me. I got bored with them very quickly, realizing that they weren't going to change and I was wasting my time trying. But, there was one Democrat on the message board who kept posting the top ten list from DU and I followed the link from time to time. It was the roving underpants icon from underpants poster which kept me around long enough to get "hooked." Mostly because I was hoping to build enough confidence to ask him how he got the underwear to move across the screen. Little did I know that I could have asked on the first post.

I was hanging out at some other political forums at the time, and one of them started posting the "Top Ten" every week. I eventually followed the link here and started lurking for awhile.

I finally registered sometime in the fall of 2001.

Btw, did you know that you can see what registration number everyone has? This is so cool, someone pointed this out months ago.

When you click on someone's profile, look up in the address bar: you'll see a six-digit number at the end. The first number will be either a 1 or a 2.

If the first number is a 1, just read the other 5 numbers to get the registration number: 123456 is user #23456. If the first number is a 2, read the other 5 numbers and add 100,000: 223456 is user #123456.

I am registered user #6679, I was here when #10000 showed up!

I was feeling isolated and alone because of my opinions and situation, and desperately wanted to interact with like minded people but didn't know if that even was possible, especially in a public forum. So, not without some reservations, I registered and joined the discussion.

I was shocked and surprised to discover that, not only was it safe here but, I had actually found home...

Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 09:38 PM by intheflow
In this article from Wired about e-voting. This article is from March '04, but I didn't find it until August '04 when I started getting nervous about another stolen election. Clicked the link in the article and I went from cruising Common Dreams every day to becoming a DU junkie. I think I've only been back to Common Dreams a handful of times since then. But look at me now, Ma! I'm a DU Mod! :)

120. At that time, I was involved in a 'freeper forum', discussing politics...
Needless to say, no arguments and sources filled with facts could convince my opponents. (Just the other week I peeked in and saw they're STILL supporting George Bush and the war.) But I tried as hard as I could and trying to find sources to base my claims on, I was Googling all kinds of things and somehow ended up at Democratic Underground.

It was the Top 10 Conservative Idiots that made me come back, though. Every week, I used to come back and read EarlG's masterpiece. Only much later, I started to read the discussion boards and only some months ago, I signed up and started posting.

After having dinner w/ some co-workers who were all starry-eyed about the impending invasion into Iraq, I came home and started Googling 'anti-war' etc. Found AntiWar.com and Democratic Underground and almost cried to discover that I was not the only one who felt something was going horribly wrong!

DU has helped me stay sane.

couldn't afford a computer much less the internet for a long time. When I could finally afford one became very involved with MoveOn and political house party's, Michael Moore and Buzzflash. I lived in a very remote(republican entrenched) area at the time so it was hard to connect. I wished I had found DU then. I have been reading it for a few years but just recently got the courage to establish an account and post. Now I'm addicted.

132. First time I heard of
DU was afew years ago from Mr. Hannity himself. He kept commenting without substance how "terrible" and "insane" things were discussed here. This annoyed me to the extent I came to check it out. I was still a righty at the time so I didn't think to much of it one way or another.

It wasn't until.. alittle over a year ago I began having huge misgivings about "my" party, and thats when I remembered DU. I think I lasted a week before I got banned. I attempted to argue with people here hoping they would confirm my ever growing beliefs about the RW. I went about it in the wrong way, and I think people thought I was some kind of a freeper plant lol. Anyway.. over the course of this year, it became apparent where my beliefs should take me, and that I had been in the wrong tent for far to long holding my nose.

138. I was a regular at Smirking Chimp (before it pretty much
jumped the shark), when we heard news about H2O man's predictions that big news on the Plame investigation would be coming after June 14, 2004.

I came here to read what he had to say, and stayed, because by then the message boards at SC had become a real drag. Only gigantic, endless omnibus threads were allowed on any topic, so it took forever to load a thread or to read through the posts.

No matter how different one's angle was, it had to go on the same thread, so most posts just got buried. Meanwhile, the board's owner was getting all dictatorial and banning people who said anything he didn't like--or who defended the people he had banned for trivial reasons. Some of the people he banned were not only long-time regulars who contributed intelligent, well-supported posts, but big financial supporters of the site, too.

I see that now he has serious fundraising signs up about the wolf being at the door. It makes me sad, because that site used to be one of my favorites. But I think he drove away too many people, and then he messed with the site's easy to use format, so it isn't even that enjoyable to go there to read the front page articels any more.

So now I hang out at DU. It's easy to read, its rules are reasonable, and there is no sudden, arbitrary banning of people for daring to express an opinion. Also, although it does get old when a dozen threads pop up on the same topic, I still prefer that to the enormous omnibus threads on SC. Here at DU, when a thread gets too full, like the running debate threads, they clsoe it and satrt up a new one, so it isn't all in one impossible to load or read thread.

I lurked until 2005, but after she sent me that link, I started reading DU nearly every day.

Then, I finally decided to join, because from the beginning, I felt I'd come home. Before that, I pretty much felt like I was in the wilderness, because I never supported Bush, even after 9/11 happened. I saw him as a fake before 9/11, and when he stood on that truck with the fireman, I still saw him as a fake. That has never changed.

172. I came to laugh at all of you
First, I came to laugh at all of you. I was directed here by another site for a "giggle" at the liberals, ok you were a joke "commie pinkos". And I did laugh and think that your "kind" were a threat to all I believe in, so I began reading to know what I was fighting against. And I read some more, and it began to be painful to my belief system. Change can be like that. Then I began looking around at my world I thought I was protecting and began seeing it in a different light. To make a long story short. Here I am after months of struggle, I've donated to DU to thank them for my education (something I never did on other sites) and today I donated money to the John Edwards campaign. It's been a bumpy interesting ride to get to where I am now, and I thank DU. You lot still scare me so it probably be my last post, but thank you again.

175. In early March 2001, idly surfing the Web in my disconsolation.
I found Buzzflash, Bartcop, and DU all in a short period of time. It was so long ago I can't remember in what order or which one referenced me to the others.

I DO remember Googling "Bush stole the election" and that one search opened up an entire world to me.

Back in those days, there couldn't have been more than two dozen active DUers. The conversations were much smaller, more intimate coffee klatches.

I lurked for a couple weeks, but being a bigmouth myself, couldn't keep from joining in before long.

And while I have occasionally stpped back and away from DU for periods of time, I never left except one time when the mods tombstoned me for joining in the virulent flamings once too often.

Gawd, that was in 2002, I think. Eventually I came back hat in hand, though. I never regretted it and time mellowed me out a little, I guess.

178. Bill O'Reilly led me here in 2003
For years, I had been a bit depressed about a lack of a truly liberal outlet for news. I had been online since 1993 or so, but had never really gone out to search for "alternate" news sites - though, I did get some good information on foreign English-language sites. However, I was against the war in Iraq, but couldn't really find much information about my point of view and why I should be against it.

Then, I heard about Bill O'Reilly having a hissy fit over this new book from Al Franken called "Lying Liars" and I got intrigued. I had never taken Al seriously because he was the Stuart Smalley guy - but, I picked up the book because of O'Reilly's crusade and it really opened my eyes. The book & the information really spoke to me and my point of view, and it made me laugh.

So, I made a determined search online and found a site called "O'Reilly Sucks" - the owner was also a DUer who eventually led me to here.
