9. Why are they scabs?

They are managers, if not owners,of a company. What are they supposed to do? Just because your labor force decides to strike you don't shut down the company for good. At some point, strike or no strike, the company must continue or just close its doors.

I worked for a company in a construction related field. I was a sales manager and therefore not in the trade union. When they went on strike, I still had to come to work everyday if I wanted to keep my kids housed and fed. We still had customers to serve and a job to do. Does that make me a scab?

3. What I hate most

is that two months have gone by, and I don't know where that time went. What happened to November and December? It's already January of 2008. We're a week away from the half way point of January. Screw the country, I want my time back.

Yet, in the end, we'll get neither. Quiet desperation indeed.

5. The WGA has a picket line for these shows?

I thought Stewart and Colbert were going to focus on interviews, and had the tacit approval of the WGA for re-opening their shows. Correct me if I'm wrong.

11. according to this NY1 story the writers will be targeting the shows

Starting Monday, the Writers Guild of America East says members will march outside the New York studios of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," the "Daily Show with Jon Stewart," and "The Colbert Report."

The guild says the protests will be directed toward NBC and Viacom, and not at the hosts themselves.

Without the staff of writers, Jon and Stephen will be sorely taxed to provide the kind of slick quips we've come to expect from them.

I can see him riffing about the good days of unions when they were needed to fight the railroad tycoons but all they have done now his deprive my audience of my presence every night.

Personally, I think the writers are asking for the wrong things in their contracts. I think they should be asking for complete freedom to pursue their own internet deals / models w/outside interests.

Traditional corporate media cannot survive, IMO. The management system is too top-heavy to be able to react swiftly, which is a complete necessity on the net, and the writers/content who can act swiftly will occasionally go too far for good taste in their creative efforts.

i mean, they are writers themselves after all.

i think this will be interesting to watch...
they both have strange personal senses of humor from what ive seen of their past work ;)
itll definitely have funny moments regardless, cause they are funny guys.
they both kinda come from the back ground of making up things as they go ;)

17. Thats great. And not so great.

I doubt this decision was made lightly. Especially since they were the first to pay their striking writers out of their own pocket.

They're in a tough position. I hope they find an honorable way to do this.
