The Nation: Conservative Myths and the Women Who Love Them

Conservative Myths and the Women Who Love Them
Jessica Valenti

When it comes to thinking about the people who are ruining this country, I've always reserved a bit more disdain for women who do the very easy work of bashing feminism--often for little more than a patriarchal head-pat. (After all, what's easier than reaping the bountiful rewards of telling conservative men that women indeed are inferior, different, and desperately in need of their guidance?)

Organizations like the Independent Women's Forum, which exist solely to further conservative, anti-woman nonsense--like their insistence that the wage gap is actually good for women or that the biggest danger to young women on college campuses is The Vagina Monologues--piss me off like little else does. Perhaps it's unfair that women's anti-feminism irritates me more than men's, but there it is nonetheless.

The latest in anti-women diatribes comes from Wendy Wright, from Concerned Women for America. In a recent Fox News Special Report, Wright said that proponents of comprehensive sex education are encouraging young people to have sex because "they benefit when kids end up having sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancies and then they lead them into having abortions…You have to look at the financial motives behind those who are promoting comprehensive sex ed."

(For some perspective, Wright has also made the argument that the increase of women in prison is all feminism's fault, for teaching women that "they don't need to be dependent on a husband and they shouldn't have to depend on their family" which could lead them to "where they're forced to fend for themselves." So, yeah.) ......(more)

1. "concerned women for america", don't forget, was founded by beverly le haye,
wife of tim le haye of that awful "left behind" series--VERY fundy reichwing. beverly was once on an afternoon talk show (phil, I think), and said, with an absolutely straight face, that "if we don't teach our teenagers about sex, they won't do it". the audience had hysterics/

6. That explains a lot of their thinking, really.
They are apparently so uptight that sex is burden to them, not a pleasure.

What a pant-load of 50's era male chauvinism. Riiight. We've had a dictator for the last 7 years whose sociopathic cold-blooded tactics have killed millions and bankrupted our country. Some role model :eyes:

3. It's interesting in light of conservative attempts to brand Hillary "too masculine"...
...that now they're jumping on her for crying like a 'girl."

I have to admit though, that the list of things that should choke-up a potential American President should not include "party primaries." That's not a gender issue though, I'd be equally turned off if a male candidate choked up over his nomination prospects.

4. Yeah, these fussy old Prunellas on the far right are just SO
concerned with the poor moral choices their sisters make when that two years of welfare run out that they get all verklempt. I can tell.

Meanwhile, it would be instructive to publish a list of their membership with a list of how many kids they have in rehab or prison or worse.

That type of busybody conservatism is a soul destroying philosophy, and it hits kids the hardest.

5. How Many Women in Prison
are there because some guy talked them into carrying drugs or weapons 'if you love me, baby.' If they'd been taught to take care of themselves and given opportunities like the Wendy Wrights of the world sneer at, maybe they wouldn't be in prison today.

8. Who let Wendy Wright out of the house?
After all, that's where the woman's place is; in the kitchen and making babies.

:sarcasm:

of women who have more fun than she does.

10. Self loathing.
Similar to Michelle Malkin's self loathing syndrome. Those "Concerned" hags can shove it.

like how oligarchic parties in the old Soviet Bloc or "Westernizers" in Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, etc. are portrayed in the media

13. It must be frustrating for conservative women that all their men are repressed gays.
