"What no one seemed to notice," said a colleague of mine, a philologist, "was the ever widening gap, after 1933, between the government and the people. Just think how very wide this gap was to begin with, here in Germany. And it became always wider. All this has little, really nothing, to do with knowing one is governing.

"What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, little by little, to being governed by surprise; to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if the people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security. And their sense of identification with Hitler, their trust in him, made it easier to widen this gap and reassured those who would otherwise have worried about it.

John Edwards is the one who is speaking for me and my kids now. The oldest is pissed that states started leapfrogging to move up the dates of the primaries, and he will turn 18 5 days after our primary, so I made a deal with him that we'll broker my primary vote. I still get the final say, but we've had many discussions and he's been looking at more of the candidates than just his first or second choice. He has to discuss votes and positions with me, too. It's been a learning experience for both of us and we've both decided that we're not quite as rigid as what we first thought - room for negotiation. He really liked Dean and Carol Mosely (sp?) Braun (sp?) the last go around.
