On tonight! FRONTLINE: The Medicated Child (On PBS Now!)

Don't get me wrong, My Brother would probably be dead today had he not started drug treatments when he became violently psychotic at about age 18, but something about giving drugs for "bi-polar" to a 2 to 10 year old child is really very questionable.

2. My almost 8 year old is on a mild medication.
It as helped him to get learn to control himself. We see it as a bridge to the point where he can do it without meds.

Its made the difference between a little boy who had to be in the principal's office for out of control behavior that was sometimes violent to a little boy who is having fun and seeing success.

We fought LIKE HELL against it until we didn't see any other way. We are not "DRUG 'EM" people, but it has been a positive for our son.

3. That's good, I'm glad it's working for you...
...like I said, I'm not an anti-drugs person. I, myself, took several medications as a child after a head injury as an 1 1/2 year old, to prevent seizures. I doubt I needed to needed to take the drugs until I was 12, because I don't think I had any problems that long (other than being over medicated a few times), but who knows? It might have been the drugs that kept me symptom free for the last 5 to 7 years? It's really hard to say.

I currently take drugs for ADD and it's made a world of difference over the last 10 years. My ADD was undiagnosed for 32 years, I'm sure my life would be very different if I had been given this diagnosis back in High School, now there's nothing I can do about it now.

Just watch out for doctors that seem over eager to add more drugs and things like the just showed like that Dr. Phil show group, pushing drugs "to increase blood flow" to different parts of the brain.

4. As soon as we see it possible,...
...the meds END!

Both ChicaAzul and I are "least effective dose" people, with NO dose being preferable.

5. Watching it now. I confess—I think it's actually good.
I expected it to br 100% pharmaceutical company propaganda.

6. Have you ever seen FRONTLINE before?
They don't do that sort of stuff, they do stories about "news" programs that do that sort of story.

7. Yes, hon. But the fact remains, it is very, very difficult to get ANYONE

to acknowledge that most of what comes out of mainstream pharmaceutical companies today is, at minimum, highly questionable in terms of both safety and effectiveness. I wasn't expecting Frontline to be "above" touting the "company line" on prescription meds, especially because even I (big fan that I am) feel Frontline has compromised its credibility in recent years (the piece they did on Rove comes to mind). But this one was good.
