An Onion artical from seven years ago rings absolutely true:

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

WASHINGTON, DC–Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over."

"My fellow Americans," Bush said, "at long last, we have reached the end of the dark period in American history that will come to be known as the Clinton Era, eight long years characterized by unprecedented economic expansion, a sharp decrease in crime, and sustained peace overseas. The time has come to put all of that behind us."

Bush swore to do "everything in power" to undo the damage wrought by Clinton's two terms in office, including selling off the national parks to developers, going into massive debt to develop expensive and impractical weapons technologies, and passing sweeping budget cuts that drive the mentally ill out of hospitals and onto the street.

During the 40-minute speech, Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years.

..snip

Finally, the horrific misrule of the Democrats has been brought to a close," House Majority Leader Dennis Hastert (R-IL) told reporters. "Under Bush, we can all look forward to military aggression, deregulation of dangerous, greedy industries, and the defunding of vital domestic social-service programs upon which millions depend. Mercifully, we can now say goodbye to the awful nightmare that was Clinton's America."

..snip

OMG. Just about everything in it has come true. :scared:

1. WRONG!
Hadn't you heard? That peace and prosperity was actually a horrible nightmare according to the Clintonophobes on DU. Somehow 31 million people in poverty is "more poor people" than 38 million, and a $5K bump in REAL median income (inflation adjusted) means nobody could find a decent job in those nightmare years.

2. In satire, the truth is often held
Too bad many of us previously non-political junkies are finding out that all was not well during the Clinton administration(Screw Monica- George is sharing a be with Jeff Gannon!).

I think one DUer put it best, although I can't give proper credit.

"Bill Clinton was an exceptional Republican President."

And so he was. He was nice enough to allow some of us to benefit(Though I never saw any of that, myself- being an untouchable sucks!)

3. it's like they looked into the future
I find it sad that comedians and average people saw this coming, and now so many Republicans who are turning on the lame duck did not.

:sigh:

And I remember thinking back then that they nailed it--it's fully what I expected from this administration. And as this post points out, those low expectations have not been disappointed. :grr:

9. Wow.. if the guy who wrote that article
also predicted Hillary winning last night - then give him a trophy.. he's better then a psychic any day.

I'm sure I probably read that article in '01 and laughed out loud (after crying because of the Bush Victory). Who knew that I should have been crying instead about the truth of the article.

12. That's it! The ONION must be behind the BFEE. Why didn't we see this before?
That article actually hit way too close to home, but, it's pretty much what we were all afraid of. I hate it when we (the collective left) are right. Remember that SNL skit with the map on fire and the Mexico border all the way up by Kansas?

16. yes, and Will Ferrell (as Bush) whimpering ...
... about how he didn't want to come out from under his desk, because people were yelling at him. And how buildings in DC were burning.

The SNL writers (and evidently a lot of other people, judging by the vote tallies) had a pretty good idea of what a disaster Junior would be. Just one of the reasons why the debacle has been so tragic.

13. It's so true because that is exactly what bush always intended to do:
bankrupt the federal government, widen the gap between rich and poor, find an enemy to go to war with, etc. and at least some of us could see what was coming. But hey, I betcha he's a great guy to have a beer with!

Thanks for posting this.

14. I remember having a discussion in the summer of 2000, and I commented
that all of the items that are listed would be things Bush would pursue. Funnily they all came true. The person i was talking to had no problem with Bush's policies. AFAIK, he is still unemployed!

21. I read that when it came out
my now ex-wife said that it was "irrational" and "irresponsible." and "Bush would turn out to be a great leader." soon after she was arrested for a DUI and cocaine possession. after bailing her ass out of jail paying for her defense and then watching her run off with her dealer. I concluded just who was "irresponsible" and "irrational". I knew then the onion article it would turn out to be true.
we had a huge fight when bush was selected and I said "soon we will be at war somewhere" she tried to use that at our divorce hearing. the judge said " you are not paying much attention to world events are you? bush invaded Iraq today."
