Helen Thomas recommends a film, and a day in the life of a political junkie
On the train from NYC down to Washington today, I ran into Bill
Clinton (he sustained no life-threatening injuries), and then,
in DC, spent over an hour with our old friend, Helen Thomas.
I didn't get too long to chat with Clinton, as his Secret Service
guys were glaring at me, and he was working the whole trip with
people from his foundation. We chatted about--what else?--Hillary.
He wasn't at all pushy on the subject, which I appreciated.

Helen, by the way, greatly recommended a movie called "The Great
Debaters." I had never heard of it, but if she recommended it, then
I'm definitely going to see it.

If anyone here has seen the film, I'd be curious to know what other
DUers thought of it? Just idle curiosity, because if Helen recommended
I go see it, I will go see it even if 50 DUers hated it!

3. It's a Denzel Washington directed movie
about a professor at an historically Black college, Wiley College in Texas, mentored a top-notch debate team, and highlighting its trials, tribulations and triumphs.

When I have time, I am going to see it

5. She did mention that it was based on a real story
Of course, "Good Morning, Vietnam" was based on a real story, too,
but Adrian Cronauer (the real one) says that if he had done half
the stuff portrayed in the film, he would have ended up in Leavanworth.

I'll just take the film for what it is, and not try to critique it
on the basis of how much it conforms to any true story.

6. I loved it. I highly recommend it. Based on real people. When you

see it, note the names (unless you already know about these people) and look them up when you get home. Makes it even better. Nice contributions to mankind by the people depicted. It's a keeper as entertaining history. But don't listen to me - I'm the kind who likes to walk out of a movie uplifted.

8. That's one point of view I share completely!
I've liked him since St. Elsewhere, and haven't yet seen him in a film
that I didn't like.
