Intelligence Chief Couches Reference to Waterboarding as 'Torture'

Associated Press
Sunday, January 13, 2008; A06

The nation's intelligence chief says that waterboarding "would be torture" if used against him, or if someone under interrogation was taking water into his lungs.

But Mike McConnell declined for legal reasons to say whether the technique categorically should be considered torture.

"If it ever is determined to be torture, there will be a huge penalty to be paid for anyone engaging in it," the director of national intelligence told the New Yorker in this week's issue, released today.

.........

"If I had water draining into my nose, oh God, I just can't imagine how painful! Whether it's torture by anybody else's definition, for me it would be torture," McConnell told the magazine

"Now if only Commander AWOL Bush would get a clue about the un-Christian brutality of his policies, he might catch up to the CIA and to me and my - um, ah - brilliance."

2. You could remove the "un-Christian" in your sentence
and argue with the statement that "brutality" is reason enough to STOP TORTURE.

3. But what would Jesus do?
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 08:55 AM by SpiralHawk
He would, I feel certain, do the true Christian thing and stop the Bush-Republicon wholesale torture policy. Not only is torture morally wrong and cruel, it produces no useful information, and it places our sons and daughters in uniform in grave danger. All of this perpetated by republicon chickenhawks who have not served...

Something is very wrong. Something is very unChristian in the republicon party.

6. You are most accurate, RC

The republicon policies of wholesale torture against other human beings (human beings who have not been tried or convicted of anything), is most accurately termed "un-Christlike." Considering the brutal "unChristlike" historical realities of the Inquisition and other mass perversions conducted under the umbrella of "Christianity," you make an important distinction.

12. Christ wouldn't intervein....
he was more thoughtful about spiritual affairs and left it to god to settle the dept that evil men racked up.

Politics and war was not his particular brand of vodka.

A lesson for all, so to speak, Christians.

5. Was McConnell being sarcastic? "Water draining into my nose" is not painful --
certainly he knows that the watermask is used to trigger the body's "I'm drowning" reflex -- it's the physical reaction and instinctive terror of imminent death that makes people say anything, anything, to make it stop --

11. Uh, water draining into your nose IS painful. Try it sometime.
People don't inhale thru their nose when swimming underwater.

7. Did you read the WH response?
Disgusting. To quote Bob Dole (hope it continually bites him in the ass) "Where's the outrage?" Evidently "outrage" (like beauty) is in the eye of the beholder.

10. Water Boarding is drowning. It is Torture.
It was sanctioned by the Pres. VP, Sec. of Defense. This was a violation of the Geneva Convention & the United States Constitution. It was a War Crime. Will there ever be Legal consequences to these Violations? I seriously doubt that there will be.
