Interesting Firearm Death Statistic
Interesting Firearm Death Statistic

Regardless of where you stand on the issue of the U.S. involvement in Iraq,

here is a sobering (and scary) statistic:

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of

operations during the last 40 months, and a total of 3,567 deaths. That

gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington D.C. is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for

the same period.

That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the

U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq .

Obvious Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington !

(received in my email - so I can't account for its validity)

1. Good job ignoring the Iraqis!

Don't worry, they aren't really people anyway.

Nevermind our soldiers are dieing because of bombs and stuff, not necessarily guns, but whatever.

3. No, that's incorrect
My math gets 669 troop deaths per 100,000 per year, using 160,000 troops for 3.33 years.

The homicide rate for DC in 2003 was 44.2, per the FBI's Uniforn Crime Report.

Musta been freeper math...

7. The avg nat'l homocide rate is about six times less
around 10 per 100,000

furthermore, if you are excluding soldier's deaths from other causes, you are leaving lots of people out and misstating the dangers for our soldiers in Iraq.

D.C. is dangerous, undoubtedly, but you are unlikely to be blown up there.

8. Invalid comparison. Compare troops to police officers.
http://www.nleomf.com/TheMemorial/Facts/2007RollCallofFallenOfficers_State.pdf
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/11000.html

Two police officers were killed in D.C. in 2007
D.C. Population, 2006 estimate 581,530
or 0.34 per 100,000 police officers.

Hardly comparable to Iraq.

12. I get disgusted every time I see this email.
It has been debunked by Snopes ages ago, and yet it keeps appearing! And it completely fails the logic test. DO People seriously believe that D.C. is more dangerous than Iraq.

How F'ing stupid do you have to be to believe this? Like Constitution avenue is mined with IEDs, and mortar shells are dropping on Adams Morgan. :eyes:

10. Do the people of Washington have armored vehicles? Body armor? Wear helmets at all times?
What an utterly ridiculous and false analogy. And a GOP talking point as well.
