Which Republican Candidate Do You Want To Be President *The Least* (And Why)?
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 05:16 PM by ihavenobias
This is NOT an easy question, especially in light of some of the statements made in the last republican debate, as highlighted here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOvjXu2RyPs&feature=user

---It's just such a brutal crop of candidates. I'll take Rudy off the table (for myself) immediately, despite his previous socially liberal record, because I actually think he'd be the MOST likely to start another war. For that reason alone he becomes a top contender for the person I'd LEAST want to become president.

---Fred Thompson just doesn't seem like he knows what's going on...the guy seems lazy, doesn't he? Becoming president seems like an afterthought for him since he did fairly well as an actor IMO. A lazy rich guy (with no intellectual curiousity) sounds way too much like our current president, so he's off the table too.

---Romney? His constant backtracking on various issues is incredible. He's been trying VERY hard to please the republican base, which has led to him to make absurd statements about wanting to double Gitmo and how he hunted "small varmints". I also didn't appreciate his speech that was supposedly about religious tolerance considering he said the following:

"It is as if they're intent on establishing a new religion in America - the religion of secularism. They're wrong."

And how about his flat out LIE that he saw his dad march with Martin Luther King? How is this guy still in the running(?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kCyAgVoHSc

---McCain has really been surging lately (pun intended). And there was a time when I would've considered to him to be an "ok" president, relatively speaking. But that time has passed, and since then he has not only lost his supposed "maverick label" (despite the fact that the MSM continues to use it), but he's also been somewhat of a warmonger. This guy once referred to people like Jerry Falwell as "agents of intolerance" but then met with him and kissed his ass to appeal to the religious right. And people still think he's somehow independent?

And who could forget his wanting to stay in Iraq for 100 years:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oeq6sYEmtS8&eurl

---Then there's Huckabee. He's the populist, especially compared to the rest of them (which explains why the conservative media has largely based him IMO). He actually seems to *care* about the less fortunate, which is again incredibly rare for a republican candidate. But of course he's extremely socially conservative and also has an awful ("fair tax") tax plan that would really whack the middle class.

I also have serious questions about his judgment in light of of the Wayne Dumond release. It's one thing to make an honest mistake, but the issue here is WHY he made the decision in the first place:
http://news.aol.com/newsbloggers/2007/12/10/the-worst-political-act-i-have-ever-seen/

And again, his statements at the last debate (as highlighted in the clip at the top of the post) were INSANE. And this guy is supposed to be a man of God and a man of peace? No way, I don't see how you can reconcile that idea with his "gates of hell" nonsense.

PS---Ok, so who would I choose if I absolutely HAD to? This might sound crazy, but I think I'd go with Romney to be president and Rudy to NOT be president. Why? Because he changes his positions constantly and has shown that if the masses want him to be more liberal, he'll often act accordingly. I can only assume he'll sing a (somewhat) different tune in the general election. How about you?

3. Giuliani. It's the neocons.
Rudy has all the worst suspects advising him. He is the neocons' first choice.

But look at how awful the Repukes are. Romney is a fraud of the first order. He has no core values. Huckabee is nuts. McCain is a neocon, too, and a man of extraordinarily limited imagination. Fred Thompson is a hopeless joke.

But I fear Rudy the most.

18. That is an excellent point
Rudy's advisers are terrible. If I remember right, Ultimate Neocon(TM) Norman Podhoretz is one of them, and that says it all.

4. Least wanted--Huckabilly. Insane, intellectually incurious, narcissistic, hidden mean streak.
Least bad--Mittens. Shifty and convictionless, but not a religious or war nut.

19. Yes, from the church/state perspective
he is clearly the worst candidate. Especially WRT a potential supreme court justice nomination.

7. Mittens is my most hated of the bunch
I survived 4 years of the Mittens regime here in MA. We all (including the MA GOP) know what a slimy, lying bastard he is. I'm pretty sure he won't win the rethug primary here, since everyone in the state now hates him.

He would turn America into a Christian Reconstructionist theocracy.

For good measure, he'd probably try to bring on the "rapture". :nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke::nuke:

15. Ron Paul
While I like about half his ideas, the other half are so off the wall that they'd utterly destroy any administration of his. Libertarianism can be an intriguing ideology until one contemplates the enormity of actually trying to implement it.

because of Church/State separation, and the mindset of Justices he would likely try to place on the SCOTUS.

In any event, I don't want ANY of them in there...

32. MittWit, 9ui11iani, DropDeadFred, McCain
Romney: is a complete fake, plastic varmint. Isn't sure what he stands for, or what he believes in besides Mormonism. This ain't the Olympics you douche!

Rudith: complete opportunist, like the man listed above. Every sentence contains noun, verb and nine eleven. Wife is an equally dangerous social climber and a harpy, watch out if SHE picks the china in the White House. Rudy deep down is an angry man, I don't want his finger on the football.

Foghorn Leghorn Thompson: B-O-R-E. Personality of a cypress stump. Wife looks like she belongs working at the Bada-Bing instead of living in the White House.

McCain: Too old, too tired and too scary. I never particularly like McLame, he sold his soul to the devil when he hugged Bush's sweaty armpits in 2004.

33. Rudy Guiliani. Not even close.
One look at his recent campaign commercial and you'll understand why. Lots of angry Muslims/Osama Bin Laden/Burned out WTC/Rudy with a creepy grin on his face. The Bush administration has done so much to run this country's reputation through the mud and damage us more and more with its rhetoric. Rudy Guiliani, and his narcissitic ego, have the potential to continue on this horrible course for 4-8 more years. Some people think he is a social moderate, but as economic and foriegn policy issues are a higher priority to me than social issues, I really don't care. And both his economic and foriegn policy stances suck to the highest magnitude.

Romney seems to be a corporate, big money suck up, which isn't that attractive to me at all.

Fred Thompson just looks dumb. The GOP was able to elevate a stupid B list movie actor to the presidency once (and whitewash and glorify his record and achievements beyond belief), but doing it twice would be like catching lightining in a bottle.

Huckabee? I really don't know. Some people are afraid of his social record, but his "fair" (read: national sales) tax endorsement is what bothers me. Although I tend to think it was just a ploy to get the corporatists off his back for his "liberal tax record" in Arkansas (their words, not mine), and it thankfully won't ever fly in reality. I guess the one good thing about Huckabee is that he seems to be a Washington outsider and far removed from the Bush administration. And Rush Limbaugh hates him. Which if the Huckster wins the nomination, we get to see a dejected Rush Limbaugh attempt to feign enthusiasm and excitement for him. That would almost be worth the risk of having a President Huckabee. Almost.

McCain? What can I say? He's joined the ranks of Colin Powell in the catagory of "Once-Honorable Republicans Who've Sold Their Soul". I half-liked him in 2000 and probably could have stomached him had he been elected that year. But his arse kissing of the Bush administration, after what they did to him, is just pathetic. And the whole "100 years in Iraq" concept is quite bothersome. Still, a McCain nomination would just kill the hard right who sees him as being too soft. Just prepare for a lot of bitchin' and moaning from the xenophobe crowd on immigration.
