HELP! PLEASE RETURN DU TO AN INTELLIGENT DISCUSSION BOARD
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 05:52 PM by xiamiam
ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!

90% of the greatest page is about the candidates...exactly the same as MSM..what has happened to the issues...does anyone care that Bush just sold 20B worth of weapons to the Saudis and increased aid to Israel by 25% over the next 10 year period..equals 75B..God knows what else is going on..

I loved this board when I could find fact based information...this is a great site which is deteriorating by the moment...I haven't been posting much, trying to stay out of the nonsense..but I truly miss DU..and screw anyone who thinks it even closely resembles the concerned activist site of just a few years ago..

could we just leave the candidates threads off the greatest page...PLEASE....PLEASE SKINNER

4. We can start by toning down the volume of the shout--er, typing, maybe?
There's lots of good discussiion here; if you use "Hide Thread" and the scroll wheel, even the "ignore" function, you might be very surprised.

Hope for a resolution & DU is restored to a great place to get fact based information other than my Yahoo front page redux, which is where msm probably gets their news.

DU has always been the place to go to find out what generic news forums don't whant the public to know.
That is what I miss.

7. USE HIDE THREAD!!!!
It's pretty obvious in most cases. People tend to entitle threads to give an inkling as to what you will find inside.

Just don't go there.

Quite frankly, I'm more annoyed about all the "instructional" threads than I am about the campaign arguments.

If you want to talk about arms sold to the Saudis, start some threads about it instead of gripe threads!

Sorry, I don't mean to be what I hate here, but jeeeeeeeeez!!!

He says it's all about the candidates and little else. We used to depend on this site for news and education. Now, it's just candidate crap.

12. Happens every election...
There are ways to get around the frustration. Hide thread, ignore, etc.

Like I said, I for one find the complaining more annoying than the over-abundance of campaign posts. Hide thread is your friend!

Once the year has passed, we'll be able to get back to abnormal:)

17. I agree with the hide thread option, but the "Greatest" page is all that many people
frequent. My husband is one of those. Most days I don't have time to go into GD the way I have today. I love it when I have time, but the greatest was a great time saver and informative. It's not now. :(

39. And it won't be until after the general election
The thing is, "we the people" of DU control the greatest page. If we start asking for admin intervention in this, we run the risk of having the page changed every time someone has a gripe.

Perhaps opening DU to "latest breaking" would help?

Frankly, I never, ever go to the greatest page. I'm more interested in seeing which threads/issues are getting the greatest number of posts, not recs. There's a big difference.

22. LBN's still in good shape.
I was a lurker here in 2004 during the primary season. I only read LBN and never ventured into any other forums. As such I never knew about the feuds and all out wars that were taking place on DU.

Tell him it's safe to venture into LBN at least. Beyond that it's at his own risk. :D

11. Intelligent, friendly discussion on DU? Are you kidding?
This is a board for mean-spirited, intolerant little brats. Don't you understand it's all for bad anti-Hillary jokes? :sarcasm:

Honestly, if they actually enforced the Terms of Service, literally tens of thousands of time-wasting morons would be kicked off. People think you're not allowed to say no to anyone these days, and so a group who don't care about the aims of the board are ruining it for people who actually care.

This used to be a much better place. I almost wish they'd abandon this one and create another.

15. Well, the best solution I can come up with is this
The problem with it is that this neat little critter doesn't exist on the Greatest page --->

So, what you have to do is open the thread and actually click on "Hide Thread" close and reload the Greatest page to get rid of it. Poof! It's as if it never existed.

I guess it might be worth asking if we could get this ---> handy little creation added to the greatest page like how it's on the Latest page.

But honestly, that will probably be more work for Elad than if we all just open the pages and hide them ourselves.

25. It wouldn't be so bad except it is a love fest for whoever candidate
is the center of idolization. Very little to absolutely no substance about where these candidates stand on anything. Just like Fox Snuz or CNN, of which I am sure the posters do get their so called information.

On a related subject, I got a chance to listen to MPR this morning. The subject was polling and where and how it effected the candidates. There was absolutely no mention of Voting Machines during the whole program. No mention at all of paper ballots. Nothing. In places it was even conspicuous be its absence.

33. My favorite was a post in a thread of mine where the writer bashed Obama supporters
for being seduced by his charm rather than his experience or his platform. Which is a perfectly reasonable opinion, right? Well, then the writer went on to say that they *did* support Edwards because... of his smile, which seemed so genuine. Uh, what?

31. It's a shame that poll results, fundraising totals, and endorsements can't be consolidated
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 06:09 PM by RufusTFirefly
.. and then posted somewhere where they can be read at a glance or completely avoided should you so choose.

Personally, I have very little use for the first two. The third is interesting. But beyond reading the announcement, the replies don't seem to add all that much.

  • Poll results are notoriously unreliable and predictably gloated about or dismissed as BS depending on your candidates. I don't really see the value of either reply.
  • Fundraising total threads (not fundraising breakdowns) are really rather circular, and I find it pretty sad -- realistic though it may be -- that we determine a candidate's suitability for the White House in part based on how much money s/he raises. (Reminds me of a scene in Don DeLillo's Underworld where people from all over the country flock to take pictures of the "world's most photographed barn.")
  • Endorsements are interesting and often even meaningful. It would be helpful to see a consolidated, running list instead of a thread for each endorsement that, once again, generates predictable responses of glee, cries of irrelevance, or grumbles of sour grapes depending on your perspective.

    32. I kind of agree...I love DU, but
I am tired of DU'ers repeating the MSM memes as if they were worth repeating.
Dennis Kucinich, electable or not, gnome or not, trophy wife with piercing or not, seems to be the only candidate with anything to say except vague, PR drivel.

It is strange how little he is mentioned on this board. I am grateful that he is running because his presence gives me a sense that not everyone is shallow and empty beyond belief.
"We will restore America". OK. By doing what? Do you have the nerve to say what you will do? So far, I have heard a lot of demagoguery but very few pledges to like, restore the US Constitution by working to revoke the Patriot Act, to close Guantanamo, abolish the use of torture (a phrase from the 18th Century!), and STOPPING THE ILLEGAL IMMORAL IRAQ WAR IMMEDIATELY!!

The moral fiber of this country, a model for the world for many years is gone...Which of these candidates speaks of restoring it? And which actually proposes CONCRETE plans for bringing back the middle class against which BushCo has been waging war for 7 years?

Kucinich has concrete plans that seem revolutionary, but that are merely things that have been implemented for years in other countries such as single payer healthcare. I hope he hangs on 'til Feb 5th, as I will have to vote for him. Not that I think he will get the nomination, but because I think his message is worth hearing and repeating.

    35. I agree. It's just not productive...
I'm gonna go out to a local meeting in a real town where we will have a good discussion about what we can do as citizens tonight. It real and it's civil.

Isn't that what we want to do here as well? I have my fun and I try to make fun without being TOO offensive (well, maybe a little sometimes), but I honestly am looking for some inspiration and intelligent discourse. It can be done, regardless if I'm a Kucinich supporter and anyone else is (fill in the blank).

We have got to get it together- NOW.
