another BS email and my response, suggestions welcome
and yes, I've hit 'reply to all'

her email

This is America.....Wake Up!!!

I checked this out on snopes.com and it says status undetermined. I'm taking that for a "true". Mike

From a teacher:

This is America ...WAKE UP!!!!!

This is a subject close to my heart. Do you know that we have adult students at the school where I teach who are not US citizens and who get the PELL grant, which is a federal grant (no pay back required) plus other federal grants to go to school? One student from the Dominic an
Republic told me that she didn't want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting PELL grant which paid for her total tuition and books, plus money left over.

She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD for gas to come to school, and into CARIBE which is a special program for immigrants and it pays for child care and all sorts of needs while they go to school or training. The one student I just mentioned told me she was not going to be a US citizen because she plans to return to the Dominic an Republic someday and that she 'loves HER country' I asked her if she felt guilty taking what the US is giving her and then not even bothering to become a citizen and she told me that it doesn't bother her, because
that is what the money is there for!

I asked the CARIBE administration about their program and if you ARE a US citizen, you don't qualify for their program. And all the while, I am working a full day, my son-in-law works more than 60 hours a week, and everyone in my family works and pays for our education.

Something is wrong here. Right? This is but one more example of our illustrious "tax and spend" Congress that thinks they know better how to spend our money than we do. No wonder our national debt is so high! It has never been more important to know who you are voting for and what their positions are on many issues. If the wrong people get voted into office, we all will pay a steep price in the long run.

I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the
National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close.

Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along. I am not against legal immigration -- just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your
head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and GOD BLESS AMERICA !

PART OF THE PROBLEM
Think about this: If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone -- YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM! It is time for America to speak up!

If you agree -- pass this along, if you don't agree -- delete it!

my response

the education budget is 6% of the total US spending. this includes ALL educational spending, not just Pell Grants.

in contrast, the Military budget is 59% which does NOT include Veterans Benefits (if you include those, the number rises to 63%)

I agree that fraud and waste take a big chunk out of our budgets, but I'm thinking the author's "I'm not opposed to legal immigration" is just trying to whitewash the false outrage of finding one more strawman to divert people's thinking from the real problems in this country.

Problems such as inflation, job off shoring, the environment, the deficit (both in Government and in our personal savings accounts) gas prices, food prices, the housing meltdown and the aging infrastructure to name just a few.

Let's stop buying into the silly talking point that immigration is what's wrong with this country. We've got lots more problems on our plate than a few foreign students getting a $4600 a year (yes that's right, less than $5000 a year) stipend to educate themselves and perhaps be able to make a difference in the world, whether they stay here or go back to their country of origin.

What needs to be changed is the CEOs making 365 times the average pay of a blue-collar wage earner in 2006, compared with 42 times in 1980. I'm much more concerned with the crony capitalism rampant today. The middle class of this country is being squeezed out of existence. That is the real tragedy.

1. I think you might want to check those numbers again...
military/defense spending, while large, does not approach 59%

3. It sure does when you add in all those items not covered by the DOD budget, which has exceeded
50% of US discretionary spending since 2003. There is an additional $23.4 billion just to maintain our nukes (DOE). Then there's the 'black ops' which isn't listed anywhere. Some add in the interest we pay for past military expenditures as well. At a minimum, we're spending over 53% of our discretionary budget on the military.

6. Well, yeah...
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 11:56 AM by SDuderstadt
since the discretionary budget is not the entire budget. No problem and thanks for the correction. I just didn't want people to think defense/military spending comprises 59% + of the overall budget when that simply is not true.

2. Well, she must be at a dirt-cheap school, since the maximum Pell grant for 2007-08 is
$4,310. That's the max and there are formulas that calculate how much any student will receive based on family/student ability to pay, etc.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens. FAFSA data is checked against Immigration and Naturalization Services records to verify eligible citizenship status.
