Paradise Valley water undrinkable. TCE added to water in error.
"Paradise Valley, AZ - January 16, 2008) - Arizona American Water notified 4,751 businesses and households in the Paradise Valley and North Scottsdale area today not to drink tap water until 5 p.m. Friday. The company is making bottled water available free of charge to all customers at 6215 N. Cattle Track Road, Scottsdale and at the Paradise Valley Town Hall located at 6401 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley.

Due to a malfunction at a water treatment plant, local tap water could contain elevated levels of TCE (Trichloroethylene). Until the company receives test results later this week, tap water should not be consumed or used for food preparation until 5 p.m. Friday.

The company notified all customers using an automatic-call feature."

1. How Could a Malfunction at a Water Treatment Plant introduce "Elevated Levels of TCE"?

Is that what they use for chlorinating the water there?

2. This is a cleaning solvent -- used for degreasing machinery.
Not a chlorinating agent. Should NEVER be added to drinking water, or to any container which might later be used for food or water. Not sure how such an accident could happen.
