Fuck Ronald Reagan
Ronald Reagan represents all of the worst elements of the American political experience of the last 50 years. All of them. He was, and always will be, nothing but a steaming hot pile of filthy hyena puke.

Intellectually, Reagan gave chimpy a run for his money. He was vacuous. He was shallow. He was incurious. He was a puppet and a door stop for a group of sick ideologues who really ran the country. He was a shitty actor and foolish tool.

Ideologically, he was a hater and an imperialist and far-right loony-tune. He hated the poor. He hated gays. He hated leftists. He hated communists - and he was pretty sure you were one if you disagreed with him. He hated and he hated and he hated. Just ask his own kids. He hated them and himself and his ex-wife. Ronald Reagan was a twisted unrepentant closed-minded shit-bag hate monger. And that's just for starters.

The foreign policy of Ronald Reagan did more to impoverish and kill the poor and helpless humans of the world than any world leader before or since - with the possible exception of our current chimpking. Reagan just didn't give a shit. He was going to defeat communism (which was already falling of it's own weight) and he didn't care how many children were burned alive or how many people starved to death on the way. Let em die. Reagan was a fucking asshole.

On Reagan's watch the military budget of the U.S. grew to the proportions of a heaping pile of 10,000 week-old dead and bloated Blue Whales. And it stunk just as bad. The practice of rewarding incompetent cronies with gigantic useless contracts for unneeded military hardware was elevated to art form under Reagan. Reagan's legendary megalomania, hubris and abject ignorance led him to believe the tales of any crackpot who managed to slither past the goons who comprised his inner circle. Star-wars missiles, atomic shields, space-age death rays. You name it - that dumb piece of shit would fall for it - and blow billions of your tax dollars on it.

And on the domestic front - holy shit the domestic front. Ronald Reagan was a force for the rampaging evil of anti-human destructiveness. He never met a social program he didn't scorn. He never met an American in need he didn't shit directly upon. His response to the AIDS epidemic is one of the most sickening cold-blooded expressions of pure murderous political evil in the history of the earth. Genghis Khan could only dream of such depravity and indifference to human suffering. There is so much more, but, hell, if you don't already know about this shit, then go read a fucking book or two.

Then there was Iran-Contra - the infamous orgy of unfettered criminality at the heart of the Reagan legacy. Again, look it up. Rogues, liars, crooks, murderers and ignorant heartless scum surrounded Reagan at all times. Alli Babba would've been shamed. But Ronald Reagan was shameless.

Oh, did I mention The War on Drugs and it's ballooning of the prison/criminal industrial complex and the rise of brainless goon-like authoritarianism? Or the destruction of the modern labor movement including the cowardly firing of the Air Traffic Controllers? Or the beginnings of the current trend of packing the Judiciary with corrupt freakish pseudo-fascist stoolies? Or the repugnant rapes of Lebanon and Grenada? Or the dim-witted goofball junk science that came to known as "Reaganomics?" Or grant rigging at the Department of Housing and Urban Development? Or James Watt and the whole-hearted attempt to destroy the earth and all it's inhabitants at the expense of greed mongers and corporate whores? Or the largest white collar theft in the history of planet Earth - the Savings and Loan Bailout? And on and on and on and on.

I really don't have time for this shit. So let me conclude,

Ronald Reagan will forever be remembered as one of the most idiotic, vile, worthless leaders of any any nation in any era. He presently occupies a special place in Hell beside Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot. And I promise you, they all think he's an idiot too. Fuck Ronald Reagan. And then fuck him again.

194. Let's examine Ronnie the Raygun's contributions to our great country:
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 10:43 AM by Raster

(1) The beginning of rampant homelessness;
(2) The crack cocaine epidemic AND "Just Say No;"
(3) The groundwork for media deregulation and consolidation;
(4) Wholesale deregulation of all critical national infrastructure;
(5) The Iran/Contra Affair;
(6) "Morning in America" which has turned out to be "Mourning in America;"
(7) Lee Atwater, Roger Ailles and KKKarl Rove;
(8) The Savings and Loan Crisis;
(9) The stock market crash of 1987 "Black Monday;"
(11) Sandra Day O'Connor and Anton "Italian Inquisition" Scalia;
(12) Reagonomics and "trickle down" economics
(13) The invasion of Grenada;
(14) The AIDS/HIV crisis;
(15) Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars");
(16) The HUD Scandal;

And the list just goes on and on.

The Great Communicator: Communicating greed, arrogance, cronyism and bad hair dye to everyone! Roast in hell!

Wake up America!:kick:

216. I'm gonna tell you why Reagan is 1000 times worse than Bush
Because if Reagan was never in the White House we would have never had the mess we had today.

You find it odd that so many ex Reaganites are part of the Chimp regime? That's not a co-incidence, those people like Cheney & Rumsfeld, worked to help get Bush in position to run for office. Bush is merely the stooge to bring back the so-called glorious Reagan Years.

After Reagan left office and Bush lost his second term. The Reaganites needed a stooge in the White House to help undo the damage of the Clinton administration and finish what Reagan started. The Reaganites needed someone with instant name recognition that would help conjur up the so-called 'glory' days of the Reagan years. Only one problem - none of the 4 Reagan children were capable of that job. Maureen & Patty always were known for their spats with the family, Ron Jr always had whispers about his personal life and Michael - well he was a loop job.

So the next thing they looked at was the Bush family. Mind you, they didn't need a career politician. They just needed someone who would be happy enough for the role of president and willing to do what they told him to do. This person was really nothing more than a puppet for the old Regan administration. Probably the only Bush most capable of the position was Jeb. He was never much of a problem child and led a somewhat stable life. But the repukes knew they would need to have 2 large electorial states prime for the pickings and figured Texas would be that 2nd state. Texas Governors aren't really the ones that run the day-to-day government, that's the Lt. Governor. So Bush really couldn't do too much to screw up that state (oh but he did enough). So you have 2 Bushes in states that will pretty much guarentee you (with a bit of backoffice manipulation) about 80 electorial votes. Only one problem - Jeb didn't win his 1994 election, so the repukes had the thrill of cleaning up a draft-dodging cokehead drunk and make him a 'president'

So this is why Reagan will always be worse than Bush. If we never had Reagan, we wouldn't have the greed that would do whatever it takes to get 'Reagan' back into the White house.

but keep in mind that Reagan may not have been possible if not for Nixon. Many of these Reagan Bush cronies got their start with Tricky Dick. And Nixon tapped into the Goldwater reserves. But Reagan took Nixon's evil and multiplied it by a million. I go back and forth between he and Bush...but I think Bush may end up leaving the United States is more desperate straits than even Ronnie did. Two sides of an awful coin.

I will be 35 this year...and 21 of those 35 years include a Bush, Reagan, or Nixon presidency. What the hell did I do to deserve that? That's 60 percent of my life...somebody owes me big for the next 35 years.

281. Heck if you want to go back to the origins of this mess
You ought to go back to George Wallace. He was the first to make hatred popular. He was the first to exercise back-slapping, down-home, smiley-faced nastiness.

Maybe only us old folks remember that he was the darling of the college lecture circuit around 1966-67. That wasn't too many years after he stood in the doorway to keep a black man out of the state university. I remember a college classmate telling me he was going to hear a cool lecture with George Wallace, and I remember my jaw hitting the pavement.

He was the first to give meanness of spirit a happy face. Without him, I doubt any of this would have been possible.

353. There's no point in comparing which of the three is worse. They are all part of the same thing.
The Bush Crime Family has controlled EVERY Republican administration since World War II. Richard Nixon owes his entire career to Prescott Bush, and it was Grandpa Bush who introduced Tricky Dick to his "golfing buddy" Ike Eisenhower. Ike, to his credit saw the agenda of his employers for what it was and actually tried to warn the American people, but obviously his prophetic words were ignored.

He was the first and the last of their chosen presidents who was NOT 100% on board with the agenda. Reagan might not have understood exactly what the agenda was, but he didn't oppose what he knew of it. Same with Chimpy.

290. I think it came before that
Many of these vermin snuck into the political scene during the waning days of Nixon and during the ensuing years when we really didn't have a president -- just Gerry Ford stumbling around.

This is why I have a theory that Nixon was brought down from the inside by forces loyal to the fascist organization that included Prescott Bush. They went underground after the failure of the fascist plot of 1934 and stayed underground during WW2. They re-emerged with the murders of JFK, RFK, and MLK and then used Nixon's megalomania to bring him down, opening the door for a caretaker president. It's important to remember that Poppy Bush is a long-time spook and Woodward is a spook (there is no such thing as an ex-spook). This would account for why Woodward was getting the dirt on Nixon right from Langley.

Once the door was opened a crack, all the vermin rushed in -- Cheney, Rummy, and that whole fascist crowd. They've been around ever since.

What we're seeing today is merely the conclusion of Prescott Bush's fascist plot of 1934.

258. Holy crap
that was ignorant Freep bullshit if I've ever seen it. And LOLOLOLOL at economic prosperity...are you kidding me?!!?!??!! Sure, if you were rich you prospered...but does the year 1987 ring a bell? If you lived in Colorado Springs, the place damn near became a ghost town due to Reaganomics. Buildings be built and foreclosed on all over town because of the S&Ls. I daresay that happened all over the country. The S&Ls are STILL the wost financial crisis of all time in this country...and it is still part of our debt. Remember the debt? Reagan and Bush account for most of it.

Reagan did one thing that I give him credit for...though it was a mirage. The national mood did improve during his time in office. This is mostly because he controlled the press and got that morning in America crap out there. But a large number of Americans were happier under Reagan than they had been previously. The amazing this is...they shouldn't have been. Reagan saw the meteoric rise of the values voters who were happy with every socially conservative thing he said no matter what he was doing to their checkbooks. We are still seeing this today. How many complete fools voted for Bush even though he was the worst thing for them economically? I know why the rich vote for Reagan and Bush...it even makes sense...but lower, middle-class trailer park folks?!!??! No one has benefited less from the Bush Reagan presidencies then they have, and yet they continue to cast these dumb ass votes. The other thing he did that improved the national mood was play the patriot card against the Soviets. It was smart to do politically, but a disaster economically.

As for taking down communism...communism was coming down no matter what. The USSR's system couldn't sustain itself. But what Reagan did was damn near bankrupt us to do it. He almost ruined the USA with his ridiculous spending. The Soviets, who were no angels and completely complicit, spent with us until they could spend no more...completely ruining the live of hundreds of millions of people in the USSR and all their satellite countries. Russia still feels the effects of this today.

Reagan's irresponsible rhetoric probably slowed Perestroika and Glasnost down as well. Remember Iceland? Reagan was completely unprepared for the summit talks and Gorbachev made him look like a fool. If that had been Bill Clinton, the cold war would have ended three years sooner, and the lives of Americans, Soviets, and the rest of Eastern Europe, would have improved dramatically. We may also have avoided the specter of nuclear war which hung over all our heads for years.

Reagan was a disaster...lets remember him that way instead.

264. Whoops...I forgot something
and I forget it all too often...as many Americans do.

Reagan did more to ruin the lives of Central Americans than any President this century. His support of the Contras was obviously criminal, but what it did to the people of Nicaragua should never be forgotten. Also, the war on drugs was a big deal for him...and nothing has enriched the drug cartels and made life miserable for the average Columbian more than the drug war. You suck Ron. I have nothing good to say about him...nothing.

I'd sort of blocked those years out, now they're all coming flooding back :(

Who was it that said, "those who do not learn from their history are doomed to repeat it"? I think we are seeing the evidence of a mass memory lapse, and perhaps a failure to educate as well. Thanks for the refresher course ;)

How many million Americans believe in this grave historical lie, do you think?

What I 'admire' the Republicans for, is that they effectively have created an alternative history for the past 20 years. George Orwell would have been proud of them. What I don't understand, is why Democrats have never been able to successfully challenge them about this.

I didn't like Reagan's policies. His talking to Gorbachev over the advice of the hawks was maybe the only thing. But it's the kind of schoolyard rhetoric full of "fuck" "bag of pus" on and on that, quite frankly, is embarrassing for political discourse in 2008. Except, of course, unless you're a mere kid of 12, in that case --- it fits!

I totally disliked him and his destructive policies, but I never went on a public obscenity tirade because of it. All the filth detracts from any well meant points made in this discussion.

I don't understand why objecting to vile, obscene language automatically qualifies me for "liking" Reagan or sticking up for him. Just shows the irrational thought pervasive in DU lately. It used to be somewhat civil here, now it's become downright nasty.

Well, it was probably what his horoscope told him to do that day, not any great political insight. Or maybe he just forgot what his hawkish advisers told him... 10 minutes after they told him.

Reagan was a brain dead puppet....just like George is. Reagan had a disease, George pickled his brain in alcohol for decades. Same result.

I had to come out of semi-retirement to chide you for your oh-so "mature" post. Having lived through Thespian Reagan, Governor Reagan, President Reagan, trickle-down Reagan, Reaganomics, Deregulation Reagan, Iran-Contra Reagan and "I don't recall" Reagan, there isn't enough invective in the English language to cover his insidious legacy. One thing the original poster left out of his excellent rant was Reagan's "let 'em eat cake" take on the federally funded school lunch program. When told that the lunches didn't include enough healthful foods, he pointed out with a straight face that the ketchup on hamburgers qualified as a vegetable. So much for maturity.

Some come here and disrupt by posting far, far, far left wing views OR be so incredibly disgusting and sick when it comes to language that it becomes fodder for rightwing radio (as they try to hold up certain DU posts as 'mainstream thought' within the Democratic Party). Turning it around, it would be like one of us going to the Freepers site and posting neo-nazi stuff and using really off-the-wall language and then Air America quoting the stuff WE POSTED as being examples of 'mainstream republican' thought. Trolling is NOT just the freeper flamers that cut and run. They can also be those that post outrageous thoughts and language to make the Democratic Party look like we are a party of foul-mouthed children who the country cannot be entrusted with. THAT'S why I get angry at over-the-top posts that COULD BE trolling for rightwing radio fodder.

Now, are we on the same page?

The reason being, you are defending a politician whose accomplishments include (amongst many other things) blocked funding to people dying blind and demented in hospitals from a brand new sexually transmitted disease leaving them to protest this unusual treatment of them and the government funds set aside specifically deal with such emergencies simply on the grounds of their sexual orientation, leaving others behind like my ex-boyfriend to drive buses around carrying messages regarding this matter to the amazingly ignorant populace, only to watch 40 or 50 of his close friends die pissing themselves in hospital beds and hallucinating weird shit, often ABOUT Reagan, leaving him, and me, by proxy, with a host of multiple loss issues and a large amount of unpleasant drugs.

This being the case, your understanding of "mainstream thought" about this man is irrelevant to me, frankly, and your perception of OTHER PEOPLE'S perception of MY perception of "mainstream thought" is far, very far from my mind in discussing this politician, almost as far as considerations of your fine sensibilities surrounding the language used to describe him.

29. Recommended. And to think there was something called 'Reagan Democrats'
And, evidently, they still exist, right here in River City. What do they call them now? Mainstream is it?

The RDs couldn't handle the bad news, they wanted happy endings like on TV sitcoms, 'Morning in America'.

Now they want 'hope', 'change', 'transformation'.

SSDD: Same shit, different day.

We are so lost in feel-good horse shit.

40. Obama Waxes Fondly about Reagan, Slams Clinton & Disparages the 60's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP1esS0AEzk

Watch the video for yourself. I was upset and disappointed. There is NOTHING even remotely admirable to say or imply about Reagan WHATSOEVER, and nobody in our party should be spouting that kind of crud. Clinton made mistakes, most notably the 'welfare reform' which was terrible, but he also he did much good. He is a noted as a great President and a credit to our party. Don't even get me started on anyone who even sideways puts down the best era this country ever had for CHANGE by talking about the 'excesses of the 60's'. I really couldn't believe his remarks, and am very bothered by them. Sometimes I think he loses sight of what he's saying in his effort to orate positively. He is inspiring when he speaks, but he needs to pay more attention to what he says, and not let himself get carried away with his skill in optimistic speech so that he ends up making remarks like this! I've donated money to both his and Hillary's campaigns, but I'm voting for her.

I live in CA and Reagan RUINED this state. We had the best schools and educational system until he decimated it. He was a traitor to his own colleagues and friends in Hollywood with his support of blacklisting.

He was a prejudiced and self serving person. No actors for president ever! UGH

I think not. Denigrating his achievements would be to say:

Welfare "reform", NAFTA, "don't ask don't tell", and media consolidation - among others - have together made America a crueler, poorer and dumber nation. Thanks Bill.

That would be denigrating his achievements.

99. Yes. Anyway, I agree with you about Raygun
Clinton raised taxes on the wealthy, restored the economy and brought interest rates back down so people could buy homes again, was the 1st president to speak in favor of gay rights and at least made progress with military policy and peoples attitudes, never took his eye off terrorist threats and took effective action against it, gave us 8 war free years and built good international relations, and together with Hillary tried to get a national health care program, which the next Dem pres will be able to put through. He had a Republican congress and couldn't do as much as he wanted to.

I said that he made mistakes, and mentioned the horrible welfare 'reform', and I agree about NAFTA, but he brought this country to a much better place after Reagan and Bush 1 wrought so much damage, which was no small task.

I just don't see how it's helpful now to slam Clinton when this is our election to win, no matter who the nominee is, and I didn't appreciate Obama doing so in his remarks.

It made me ill. People say they are being distorted, but I heard what he said and that's bunk. He spoke with admiration of him, period. If he believes it, cripes, and if it's some strategy to get CA votes, it's disgusting.

I mean, what a GREAT idea, build up the image of Raygun before the general election, just like the Republicans are. Oh, and people were so TIRED of those 'excesses 'of the 60's...like civil rights I guess....and READY 4 that nostalic RAYGUN 'revolution'! Maybe they'll want another one!

Thank Obama.

He did garner many a democrat's votes. He could not have trounced Carter so bad on Neocon votes alone. I have to agree with what many prominent liberal leaders said after his death. I disagreed with %99.9999 of all is polices but somehow I could not help but like that guy.

I would not vote for him at any time but if it were a choice between him and W I would... If not for anything more than entertainment value.

Chimpy on the other hand is a toxic waste dump of deception. A lier and an imbecile of the lowest caliber. A polarizing and clueless maggot with no sense of leadership. I could see no real reason to drive super hard for a Reagan impeachment but Chimpy needs to hang from a tree. Reagan made America feel better; Chimpy makes America feel ashamed.

118. Put the kool-aid down. If still alive, they are no longer Dems
Those "Reagan Democrats" were overwhelming older white racist males in primarily Southern states. For historical reasons, they remained registered as Democrats, voted in the primary for Democrats like Helms or Thurmand before they changed parties, and had not voted for a Democrat for President since before FDR, if ever. I grew up with these people, they hated Eleanor Roosevelt, wanted to impeach Earl Warren, railed against those pinko hippies in Chapel Hill, voted for Jesse Helms, and thought the Klan was right about some things.

BTW Obama's comments on Reagan are only the lastest of his attacks on our core values, our hard-earned gains, and our tragic losses. Obama is too old and too smart for me to give him the benefit of the doubt, to believe he doesn't know what he is doing.

I just heard someone on TV suggest that this might be a ploy by Obama to attract support in California where so many still worshiped Reagan. Even I had not been cynical enough to consider that possibility.

235. You know the reason he became governor at all
is because J Edgar Hoover and Co set him up against Pat Brown. They believed he could annihilate the Free Speech movement in Berkeley. The Chronicle did a HUGE 2-week Sunday suppliment in June 2002, explaining that the FBI cleaned up Reagan's dirty little record so he could be a squeaky-clean candidate. In return, the bastard promised to oppress free speech on campus. Him and his attack goon Ed Meese (whom he made Atty General of the US--worst ever B4 Gonzo) were responsible for the People's Park debacle, the Black Panther supressions in Oakland and wherever else progressive rights tried to flourish.

The writer of this article waited 17 fucking YEARS to get what he needed under the Freedom of information act. The FBI tried to stymie him at every turn. The story is unbelieveable: far most East Germany than Northern California. But I link it up to every thread, every time someone tries to tell us that Reagan wasn't so bad.

He was evil, heinous, cold-blooded and uncaring. Just because Chimpy is even worse, don't kid yourselves that Reagan had any redeeming characteristics.

Truth2Tell, Rock on! Sometimes the F bomb is the only way to articulate your anger, and your rant is pic-perfect! Tell those blue-blood puritans to close their fragile little ears if expressing the truth in blunt terms offends their sensibilites.

Here's the link to the Chronicle expose. Once you've read it, if you still have anything good to say about this evil bastard, you don't belong on DU.

Appointed Scalia to Supreme Court, tried to appoint Bork (whose nomination was defeated)

The woman who headed up that big-bucks effort, Ann Dunsmore, was last seen trying to raise money for Rudy's hopefully-ill-fated prez campaign.

These zombie-worshiping stooges' goal really is to get St. Ronnie's name on every bridge, roadway, airport, and piece of legal tender in the land.

The UCLA hospital naming is doubly enraging, inasmuch as Ronnie was such a total **turd** to the entire University of California system during his gubernatorial reign. Those were dark, dark days for higher education in California. :grr:

102. Tonight on Olbermann that jackass Lawrence O'Donnell
from Huffington Post went on and on about what a freaking saint Reagan is and how non-controversial he has become and how smart it was of Obama to praise him because only people on the "far left" don't love him and how caucus goers in Nevada aren't smart enough to realize what he did to unions. It was disgusting. I was shocked that Olbermann let him get away with it.

A lot of times O'Donnell gets it right, but when he gets it wrong he goes all the way. He's buying into this BS about people under 40 not remembering Reagan the same way over-40s do, so it's okay to invoke him as a uniter.

Well listen up, Messrs. O'Donnell and Obama: it's us old farts who vote the most, and we remember best. We were working and supporting ourselves during the worst economy of our lifetime (to date), and we were suffering, and so were our families and neighbors and communities. The 80s were ugly in so many ways.

Oh, and yeah...fuck Ronald Reagan.

115. Oooh, I missed that part
:grr:

I was listening from the kitchen while making dinner, and then the phone rang, and so on...

My dad was a Machinist business rep. Almost overnight after Reagan took office, a successful contract negotiation went from one where he won increased wages/benefits to one where he didn't have to give up too many concessions - take-aways, they were called. It disheartened him, literally, taking one of those contracts to the membership and telling them it was the best they could hope to get. He was dead in three years.

Fuck. Ronald. Reagan.

which persists to this very day. I'm particularly concerned with the way the media began its terrible slide into more and more deregulation and consolidation of ownership into fewer and fewer hands under Ronald Reagan and his FCC. In 1983 and in ensuing editions, author Ben Bagdikian wrote on this subject in a book entitled The Media Monopoly, describing what a disaster Reagan represented to media deregulation and, particularly, how the media covers elections.

courtesy of unapatriciated upthread and via David Corn at Alternet.

Consider this a rant ammendment.

Personally, I find this list goes well to the tune of "The End of the World as We Know it" by REM.

66 (Unflattering) Things About Ronald Reagan

The firing of the air traffic controllers, winnable nuclear war, recallable nuclear missiles, trees that cause pollution, Elliott Abrams lying to Congress, ketchup as a vegetable, colluding with Guatemalan thugs, pardons for F.B.I. lawbreakers, voodoo economics, budget deficits, toasts to Ferdinand Marcos, public housing cutbacks, redbaiting the nuclear freeze movement, James Watt.

Getting cozy with Argentine fascist generals, tax credits for segregated schools, disinformation campaigns, "homeless by choice," Manuel Noriega, falling wages, the HUD scandal, air raids on Libya, "constructive engagement" with apartheid South Africa, United States Information Agency blacklists of liberal speakers, attacks on OSHA and workplace safety, the invasion of Grenada, assassination manuals, Nancy's astrologer.

Drug tests, lie detector tests, Fawn Hall, female appointees (8 percent), mining harbors, the S&L scandal, 239 dead U.S. troops in Beirut, Al Haig "in control," silence on AIDS, food-stamp reductions, Debategate, White House shredding, Jonas Savimbi, tax cuts for the rich, "mistakes were made."

Michael Deaver's conviction for influence peddling, Lyn Nofziger's conviction for influence peddling, Caspar Weinberger's five-count indictment, Ed Meese ("You don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime"), Donald Regan (women don't "understand throw-weights"), education cuts, massacres in El Salvador.

"The bombing begins in five minutes," $640 Pentagon toilet seats, African-American judicial appointees (1.9 percent), Reader's Digest, C.I.A.-sponsored car-bombing in Lebanon (more than eighty civilians killed), 200 officials accused of wrongdoing, William Casey, Iran/contra. "Facts are stupid things," three-by-five cards, the MX missile, Bitburg, S.D.I., Robert Bork, naps, Teflon.

137. My obituary for Reagan! in case you missed it at the time...
Ronald Reagan's Painful Legacy: The Truth Hurts"

reagan-ears_jp60 (5k image)

It's important at times like these to not become confused. Ronald Reagan is dead. Don't be confused by the frail, sickly man with Alzheimer's that we have known since 1994. We offer this obituary as a laundry list of Reagan's evils. The great 'actor' had many and God knows you won't be hearing about them in the mainstream press. Here are the top 10:

1. CENTRAL AMERICAN POLICY

-In the name of rooting out Communism, the United States embarked on a policy of war crimes and genocide in the region. In Guatemala alone, tens of thousands of people were disappeared by their American directed government. It was the same for El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras. Today, many of the important people involved in these crimes are working for the George W. Bush administration.

2. MORTGAGING AMERICA'S FUTURE

-It wasn't wartime, but Reagan managed to more than triple the U.S. national debt during his time in office. At the same time, he left virtually no social program untouched. This left payments on the national debt the largest single item in the budget and has left America with a legacy that will last for hundreds of years.

3. DEINSTITUTIONALIZATION OF THE MENTALLY ILL

-Most care facilities (hospitals) for the mentally ill closed under the Reagan administration. This left "50,000 homeless mentally ill" on the streets in California alone. Across the country, the costs have been catastrophic.

4. REAGAN POLICY IN THE IRAN/IRAQ WAR

Here Reagan played a double game to keep either side from winning any of the crucial oil producing territory. The Soviet Union's support of Iraq forced to U.S. to secretly begin supplying Baghdad with weapons and expertise allowing Saddam Hussein to develop weapons of mass destruction which were eventually used against the Iranians and his own people. At the same time, we secretly sold weapons to Iran in order to fund our activities in Central America. The war was disastrous for both countries, stalling economic development and disrupting oil exports, and costing an estimated million lives. Iraq was left with serious debts to its former Arab backers, including $14 billion loaned by Kuwait, a debt which contributed to Hussein's 1990 decision to invade Kuwait. Reagan's actions prolonged the war and helped make it far more devastating.

5. STAR WARS

This didn't end the Cold War. Instead it wasted billions of American Taxpayer's dollars on an utter boondoggle. As such, Star Wars can be seen as a massive redistribution of wealth program from American tax payers to defese constractors.

6. THE IRAN/CONTRA AFFAIR

More criminality from Reagan and company. The Reagan administration, contrary to acts of Congress (specifically the 1982-1983 Boland Amendment), ferried funds and weaponry to the Contras gained by the sale of arms to Iran. The Contras, led by former members of the National Guard of the overthrown Somoza regime (1936-1979) received weapons and training from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, especially in guerrilla tactics such as destroying infrastructural elements and assassination... The United States Congress then on November 18, 1987 issued its final report on the affair, which stated that Reagan bore "ultimate responsibility" for wrongdoing by his aides and his administration exhibited "secrecy, deception, and disdain for the law." Oliver North and John Poindexter were indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States on March 16, 1988. Poindexter was convicted on several felony counts of lying to Congress, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and altering and destroying documents pertinent to the investigation. He avoided jail time due to a legal technicality. Poindexter, Abrams, Negroponte and many others now work for George W. Bush.

7. INVADING GRENADA

In 1979 a bloodless coup, led by the revolutionary Maurice Bishop, toppled the government of Grenada to establish a communist society. Under Bishop, Grenada began construction of an international airport with the help of Cuba. To begin to establish a case for invasion, seven months before the operation began, Ronald Reagan pointed to this airport and several other sites as evidence of the potential threat posed by Grenada towards the United States. Reagan accused Grenada of constructing facilities to aid a Soviet/Cuban military build-up in the Caribbean.

Prime Minister Bishop went to Washington, D.C., to dispel these fears, but his government was later overthrown in a violent coup... The Cuban based turned out to be an airfield for tourism and the Medical School that was under 'threat' turned out to be under no threat at all. These Reagan theatrics helpd distract people from the killing of 242 marines in one bomb attack in Beirut.

8. THE UNDECLARED WAR ON LIBYA

The conflict began with aerial combat between two Libyan aircraft and two American naval aircraft over the Gulf of Sidra in August 1981, as the US Navy was conducting a Freedom of Navigation (FON) exercise to challenge Libyan claims to control what was legally international waters This was followed by a series of Libyan sponsored terrorist incidents, most notably the airport massacres in Rome and Vienna in late 1985 and further reassertions of claims to the Gulf of Sidra , this time with threats to attack any naval forces that crossed a so-called "Line of Death," a challenge the Reagan administration quickly took up. This resulted in another FON exercise (Prairie Fire) in March 1986 by the Navy, during which a couple of Libyan naval vessels were destroyed. A spate of terrorist attacks followed, culminating in the bombing of the La Belle Discotheque in Berlin on 5 April 1986, with over 200 casualties, among them 78 Americans. The conflict with Libya culminated a week later with a raid by US Navy carrier aircraft and Air Force bombers operating from Britain against selected targets, including Qaddafi's own residence, killing his adopted four year old daughter. The conflict then subsided, ending with a bizarre air battle off Tobruk on Jan. 4, 1989, in which two F-14's shot down two more Libyan aircraft ( Source).

9. THE RESPONSE TO AIDS

The conservative climate enabled the Reagan administration's indifference toward AIDS. The administration undercut federal efforts to confront AIDS in a meaningful way by refusing to spend the money Congress allocated for AIDS research. In the critical years of 1984 and 1985, according to his White House physician, Reagan thought of AIDS as though "it was measles and it would go away." Reagan's biographer Lou Cannon claims that the president's response to AIDS was "halting and ineffective." ( Source) His actions directly led to the rapid spread of AIDS in the United States. How many deaths did this indirectly cause?

10. REAGAN'S BITBURG VISIT

This had to be one of the lowest and most insensitive things he ever did. Most Americans had never heard of the SS, an abbreviation for Schutzstaffel, an elite unit of German soldiers, until May 1985 when President Ronald Reagan outraged the Jewish Community and created a huge controversy when he decided to bypass an invitation to tour the concentration camp at Dachau on a state visit to Germany and instead opted to visit a military cemetery in Bitberg, where German SS soldiers were buried. In defense of his visit, Reagan said, "There's nothing wrong with visiting that cemetery where those young men are victims of Nazis also...They were victims, just as surely as the victims of the concentration camps." Reagan had gotten his start in politics when he worked with the Screen Actor's Guild to expose Communists in the movie industry in the McCarthy era. The Schutzstaffel (Protection Squad) was started in April 1925 as a unit of personal body guards for Adolf Hitler who needed protection from the Communist protesters who tried to disrupt his political speeches for his Fascist party, the National Socialist German Workers Party, better known to Americans as the Nazis.

The occasion for Reagan's visit was the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II and he wanted to forget the Holocaust and show that Germany was now our Ally and a member of NATO. His purpose in visiting the graves of these German SS soldiers was to "demonstrate reconciliation and friendship" with the country that had murdered 6 million Jews. However, the soldiers that he was honoring at Bitberg were not the guards at the concentration camps, the infamous Death's Head unit, which was only one part of the SS; Reagan was paying tribute to the soldiers of the Waffen-SS (Weapons SS), an elite fighting unit which included volunteers from many countries who fought the Communists in Hitler's war against the Soviet Union, something that Reagan could certainly relate to...( Source

210. This crosses the Rubicon for me and Obama... In 2004
I refused to consider Wesley Clark when I saw his comments about W prior to his run for President.

To judge Reagan as ANYTHING but a disaster for America needs to rethink what has happened since...

Can anyone rationally think we were better off with Reagan vs. Carter?

This speaks to the judgement of Senator Obama at a very basic level. Perhaps he is running for the nomination in the wrong party.

157. Truth Hurts
The Kolmeshohe Military cemetary at Bitburg, Germany has 2000 graves of German war dead. 49 of these graves are of men that served in the SS. I seriously doubt Reagan visited the Kolmeshohe cemetary with the intent of honoring SS. If he wanted to do that there were other cemetaries in Germany that contain considerably higher numbers of SS graves.

For Obama, or ANY Democratic presidential hopeful to invoke his name in any way other than as the clear anti-matter to what this country needs in a President is absolutely unacceptable. Obama didn't have my primary vote before and now he has cemented my feeling that he is just too conciliatory. We need a strong President who will work to put ALL of America back on the right path out of the morass but, who knows the principles we are fighting for and is willing to call bullshit when needed.

who have lived our lives under Reagan and the disasters that senile bastard unleashed on our country. Obama should read a book. "When the Pentagon was for Sale" details how under St. Reagan the military lost any control over the defense contractors, kicking off the corruption we're still reaping today. But that's just one of Reagan's accomplishments.

Presidents in general are scum. In fact they are the best of the scum, that's how they get in office. The "cream of the scum crop"...if you will.

That said, Reagan actually makes some of them look somewhat human by comparison...scary stuff.

- personman

"America is just the country that shows how all the written guarantees in the world for freedom are no protection against tyranny and oppression of the worst kind. There the politician has come to be looked upon as the very scum of society. The peoples of the world are becoming profoundly dissatisfied and are not appeased by the promise of the social-democrats to patch up the State into a new engine of oppression."

I have to add that this guy was a poor kid who lucked out and earned a lot of money in spite of his acting ability as a member - and later president - of a union (the Screen Actor's Guild), invested well, became wealthy, then became president, busted a union (PATCO), started what is now called "free trade," sent jobs out of the country, encouraged an environment of "downsizing" and then told the poor and newly poor to pull themselves up "by their bootstraps" like he liked to believe he did.

Scum.

I was already an adult during the Reagan era, and it always puzzled me when media figures kept referring to Ronnie as "the most popular president since World War II."

It was only after he was safely out of office that the New York Times admitted that his popularity was, in fact, only average.

He was a stupid, shallow man who had one acting shtick that he did very well, playing the genial, folksy guy next door. Otherwise, he wasn't even a particularly good actor.

It makes me sick that there are alleged Democrats who think he "wasn't so bad" or who act is if his economic and foreign policies are essential parts of the Democratic platform.

213. John Mellencamp wrote a great song about him: "Country Gentleman"
Country gentleman walked a crooked mile,
Got our money in his pocket.
Did it all with a very handsome smile.
Now, he's livin' it up in a great big office.

He ain't a-gonna help no poor man.
He ain't a-gonna help no poor man.
He ain't a-gonna help no poor man.
He's just gonna help his rich friends.

He ain't a-gonna help no women.
He ain't a-gonna help no children.
He's just gonna help his rich friends.

Country gentleman, we see him on TV,
Glad handin' folks and chattin' to the nation.
We never knew what really to believe.
Just word upon slogan with emotional connection.

He ain't a-gonna help no poor man.
He ain't a-gonna help no children.
He ain't a-gonna help no women.
He's just gonna help his rich friends.

And in the papers all we'd ever read is
So and so big-shot signed his resignation.
Now, country gentleman he wants us to believe
That he's kind and honest with the best intentions.

He ain't a-gonna help no poor man.
He ain't a-gonna help no children.
He ain't a-gonna help no women.
He's just gonna help his rich friends.

Country gentleman, now there's a bird that flew
High above his nation, preyed on its weakness.
Picked our bones and threw it in his stew.
Thank God he went back to California.

He ain't a-gonna help no poor man.
He ain't a-gonna help no children.
He ain't a-gonna help no women.
He's just gonna help his rich friends.

215. Still some stuff left out:
(Wow! Nearly 200 posts and these points haven't been brought up directly yet!)

1) Falling for proto-Neocon hysterics about the Soviets hook, line, and sucker

Remember WHY he wanted to increase military spending? because the Big Bad Bear was just slavering to swarm through the Fulda Gap, if only their "freeznik" dupes could get rid of the Pershing missles... Victory for the "Team B Analysis", no matter how wrong it was.

2) Politication of Intelligence

OK, the Operations side of the CIA were always "frat boys with guns and no honor", but the Analysis side was filled with people like Ray McGovern who had an ethic of providing the president and Congress with the most accurate information possible, regardless of what it said. Casey, Bush, and other TEAM RON members didn't care for that since it didn't help them sell their pet policies. Solution? Put in people who know how to Get With The Program.

That's been just soooooo successful, hasn't it? Thank YOU, Ron Reagan.

232. ...Even after the attack on the USS Stark
Not to mention his disgusting reaction to the USS Vincennes' shootdown of an Iranian civillian airliner.

The honorable thing to do would have been to admit to a tragic mistake and offer reparations to the families and an apology to the people of Iran (as distinct from its government).

Anything less was unworthy of all those good things we tell ourselve about America and Americans. And Reagan gave us that "less". Much less.

221. "Bait and Switch" Economics
Those tax cuts were sold on the notion that our industrial plant was older than out competitors (most of whom had to rebuild entirely after WW2), and needed updating. The lower taxes would free up money for corporations and investors to build new plants and save jobs.

Instead, most of the money went into corporate Merger-mania and buyouts, and the exploration of new ways to shuffle money into their pockets. And when new plants were built, it was in Mexico or elsewhere overseas, not here.

...an assortment of pundits and spin doctors who oppose any change we'd like to make are taking the opportunity to polish the halo on Holy St. Ron's memory again.

And that's what's being fought here. This thread is not about Obama or anyone else. Just Reagan, and reminding people he wasn't the Messiah his wannabe heirs want to make everyone believe he was.

I would like for that creep to know this in his damn grave, and EVERYONE. He killed thousands, by not funding research at the CDC.

The Truth of El Mozote
http://www.markdanner.com/articles/show/the_truth_of_el_mozote

"In the United States, however, Rufina’s account of what had happened at El Mozote appeared on the front pages of the Washington Post and the New York Times, at the very moment when members of Congress were bitterly debating whether they should cut off aid to a Salvadoran regime so desperate that it had apparently resorted to the most savage methods of war. El Mozote seemed to epitomize those methods, and in Washington the story heralded what became perhaps the classic debate of the late Cold War: between those who argued that, given the geopolitical stakes in Central America, the United States had no choice but to go on supporting a “friendly” regime, however disreputable it might seem, because the alternative — the possibility of another Communist victory in the region — was clearly worse, and those who insisted that the country must be willing to wash its hands of what had become a morally corrupting struggle. Rufina’s story came to Washington just when the country’s paramount Cold War national-security concerns were clashing — as loudly and unambiguously as they ever would during four decades — with its professed high-minded respect for human rights.

In the United States, the free press was not to be denied: El Mozote was reported; Rufina’s story was told; the angry debate in Congress intensified. But then the Republican Administration, burdened as it was with the heavy duties of national security, denied that any credible evidence existed that a massacre had taken place; and the Democratic Congress, after denouncing, yet again, the murderous abuses of the Salvadoran regime, in the end accepted the Administration’s “certification” that its ally was nonetheless making a “significant effort to comply with internationally recognized human rights.” The flow of aid went on, and soon increased.

By early 1992, when a peace agreement between the government and the guerrillas was finally signed, Americans had spent more than four billion dollars funding a civil war that had lasted twelve years and left seventy-five thousand Salvadorans dead. By then, of course, the bitter fight over El Mozote had largely been forgotten; Washington had turned its gaze to other places and other things. For most Americans, El Salvador had long since slipped back into obscurity. But El Mozote may well have been the largest massacre in modern Latin-American history. That in the United States it came to be known, that it was exposed to the light and then allowed to fall back into the dark, makes the story of El Mozote — how it came to happen and how it came to be denied — a central parable of the Cold War."

284. The horror of it all.
My friend was over for dinner and tv last night. He was 17 at the time (I was 30), remembers Reagan fondly as a good president.

My friend is buddies with a couple of mentally ill homeless guys he talks to at the bus stop (only there because there are no state hospitals for them), and one of his friends was so depressed with having aids that he suicided by setting himself on fire.

I reminded him of his stand on aids and mental illness and he just said yeah, but he was a still a good president.

I just shook my head sadly, let it go and we went back to watching Ugly Betty. When I switched to Keith Olbermanm he decide to leave because he didn't understand this stuff I was into. I teased him that I could explain it to him, but he said nah, he wouldn't because I won't watch football with him.

Is there something in the water or the vaccinations younger folk had to have?

286. I was also about 17 (maybe 16)
and I knew at the time he was bad - but not quite how bad. So its not the water or the vaccinations. I think its the parenting. My parents taught me values (compassion, help those worse off, protect the little guy, protect the environment, etc). They also talked politics regularly in front of me. It probably helped that my Dad was a professor and taught at a university in the Middle East for the first 11 years of my life but their progressive ideology existed long before they went overseas.

291. Sorry I generalized.
You're right, not every young person is/was oblivious. But so many seem to be, and it's just frustrating when even those who lived through those times and were affected by them call us "boomers who are living in the past".

It brings back one of the memes of the sixties that I regret. "Don't trust anyone over 30!" Now it seems to have become. "Don't trust anyone over 50." A little bit of Karma coming back to bite us old hippies in the butt, hey?:)

I hate this generational divide that seems to be developing. I now (kinda) understand why my parents were so frustrated at me at the time.

In my mind this was the single worst thing that he did, and it's no surprise that the World Court (or International Court of Justice, something like that) fined the United States $17 billion for it (I don't think the U.S. has ever paid it).

It's sad that the Republicans have such a problem with democracy. Ike overthrowing democratically elected governments in Guatemala and Iran, Nixon intervening in Chile, Reagan giving it a try in Nicaragua, and Chimpy having his buddies shut down the vote count in Florida.

344. Reagan was a Grinning, Smiling, Horrific Ice-Cold Bastard
Ronald Reagan was one of the worst, and probably the most corrupt and criminal, of all Presidents/Administrations, committed countless outrageous acts, and yet because of an almost total monopoly-ownership of media by the same extremist capitalist Republicans--with censorship of what happened, lies and glossing-over, and a refusal to clear anything up anymore--it has become impossible for anyone who was not there, to understand or even remember anymore, what happened.

One important point that has to be made, is that many of the most threatening violations of law and the Constitution, began with Reagan; they were not thought up by Bush, Rove, etc. They came out of the Reagan Administration, along with many of the actual people. Reagan was the first of the modern era to try to simply gut and kill Federal departments, not fund them, and appoint incompetants, lobbyists or crooks, to "run" them. The first to completely fake Government statistics, and to place more attention on how a story was "spun" than to governing. There were so many crimes, scandals, indicted/imprisoned Reagan Administration officials that it would be impossible to catalogue the entire story--an issue of "Time" Magazine from the mid-'80s called "Whatever Happened to Ethics?" or something like that, detailed the immorality up to that point; I used to have that magazine--and it was known at the time how horrific it all was, but since then, la-de-da, fairy dust, no one remembers.

During the early 1980s, Reagan moved to cut people off of their Medicare and Medicaid, with huge (one-day!) public, Congressional hearings. Cancer patients were wheeled in on their beds to testify (this was when the media used to cover the news); it killed the threat, but Republicans never repeated the mistake of doing these things publicly. The huge, continuing tax shift from rich people and corporations to the middle class and poor, began here. Things that had never been taxed before--like the collected tips for underpaid waitresses!--now were, and middle-class tax deductions, such as moderate donations to charity, were suddenly not deductible anymore. The cold, heartless capitalists reasserted themselves--gaudy wealth was now no longer considered immoral; Nancy Reagan redecorated the White House for $1 million just at one spurt, and other profligate spending at other times. Statistics were now faked: the military was now counted as among the employment number, and people working as little as one hour a week were counted as employed, falsely lowering it. Unemployment benefits were cut, and other new rules for pay: cashiers at stores, who up until then had made a good living at it, were suddenly, 1981, busted back to poverty-level minimum wage, and overtime was not automatically paid at time-and-a-half or double-time, sometimes it was at the same rate as usual, previously illegal. The PATCO union was busted, and other large strikes, (by miners, etc.), were broken up, rather than renegotiated, as before.

The budgets of all programs related to poverty and helping people with direct cash payments were all gutted, there were attempts to kill the Dept. of Education (Reagan called it "subsidized curiosity") and the Dept. of Commerce which oversees business (and corporate crime). Clarence Thomas--yes, that one--now headed the Equal Employment Opportunites Commission, can you imagine! Poverty went up, jobs programs and education programs were cut; food stamps and hand-outs of food to the poor, cut.

They militarily built up Saddam Hussein, al Qaeda, the Contra death squads, then refused to testify at Congressional hearings, going to jail instead. They illegally mined the harbors of Nicaragua, propped up dictatorships around the world on the basis of commercial trade, and turned European opinion against us, as being as bad as the Soviet Union, for the first time--I remember the protests.

They refused to carry out any environmental laws, and you might remember Anne Gorsuch Berford and her assistant Rita Lavelle being convicted of lying before Congress and refusing to turn over documents about how hazardous wastes were being stored; they lost their jobs. For the first time since the passage of Clean Air/Clean Water laws, commercial pollution, oil spills, dumping into waters, and the rest, went unpunished and not cleaned up. Corporate executives and lobbyists started to head these departments themselves, a trend that increased since. Lying to Congress, not providing documents, "taking the fifth" before Congress, all these became standard, and happened over and over again.

For the first time, abortion clinics were not protected by the Federal Government, and attacks, bombings, murders, protests that increased to stalking and threats, began to flourish. The hysterical anti-abortion terrorism that became such a threat to liberty, began here. They had free reign. Civil rights/anti-discrimination laws were not followed, and cases not filed, as now. They just stopped doing it! You might also remember that the Reagan Administration, as now, was also found to have been spying on the American people by way of the FBI--tapping phone calls, reading letters and other paper communications, infiltrating groups, and it all began, if I remember correctly, with protesters against the Nicaragua/El Salvador interference. You might remember that when the American nuns were raped, tortured and murdered in El Salvador, Gen. Alexander Haig testified that "maybe they ran a red light, or a stop sign."

This was the first of the modern era of ignoring all laws for the sake of commerce--all mergers were approved, even when there was concern from judges, advocacy groups, etc.; they were all just rammed through. Attorney General Ed Meese tried to kill the Miranda warning for arrested suspects by not enforcing against violations of it by police, and had to be stopped by a judge.

The frightening recession that is just starting now, was exactly like the two severe recessions under Reagan, both caused by tax cuts for rich people, and both solved by tax increases for rich people. There were the S&L scandals, other banking and stock market scandals, exactly like the ones now, deregulation, etc.

Upon taking office, Reagan remarked to the outgoing President, Jimmy Carter, a real Christian, at being impressed with how the murderous dictator Pol Pot of Cambodia managed to get all dissidents and opponents drafted into the army and killed. I remember the Phil Donahue (early 1980s) where Carter expressed flabbergasted shock at that horrific remark. The media fell asleep, again (in between dick-sucks). Reagan used to play this game of pretending not to have heard a question, grinning, smiling, like "can't hear you," and the media fell for it and did not know what to do, every time.

The debt came from Reagan, the deficit increased under Reagan, the inequality of pay for work and taxes on work or wealth, all came from this era, changing all previous policy back to the 1800s Gilded Age. The only reason why there was not aa Era of Horror then, as we have now, was that the Supreme Court, groups filing class action lawsuits, and occasionally the Democratic Congress, fought back routinely and killed these things before they could really grow. You have to read a book or two to really get the scope of all the lawbreaking and outrages committed here. This Administration had the largest number of indicted and imprisoned officials of any, ever--if it is no longer the record, it is only because the current Administration, made up of many of the same people, passed it. Reagan is a hated prick, for a reason.

360. I'm OK with that
:)

I should add, if I had expected in my wildest dreams that this post - which I cranked out on an angry whim - would get 230 recs, I would've at least corrected my grammatical errors. Ahh well, I guess you never know what's gonna catch people's attention. Maybe it's like they say - just use "fuck" in the subject line and you'll rocket to the top of the greatest page. :P

371. an evil man who unfortunately had the one qualification for a happy life, a bad memory
when i wonder how evil people live with themselves, i think of reagan and understand

justice was never served for the evil reagan did or the many thousands of innocent central americans directly murdered by his actions

i agree that he's there with hitler, stalin, and the rest of that ilk, he was the happy smiling face of genocide if you ask me
