Obama pledges support for Animal Rights
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama says he won't just be a president for the American people, but the animals too.
"What about animal rights?" a woman shouted out during the candidate's town hall meeting outside Las Vegas Wednesday after he discussed issues that relate more to humans, like war, health care and the economy.

Obama responded that he cares about animal rights very much, "not only because I have a 9-year-old and 6-year-old who want a dog." He said he sponsored a bill to prevent horse slaughter in the Illinois state Senate and has been repeatedly endorsed by the Humane Society.

"I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other," he said. "And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals."

1. John Edwards is the ONLY major candidate who has a stated position paper on animal rights. He is
also the only candidate to take a stand about the poisoned pet food.He is also the owner of three dogs who he references in his statement. Obama is not a pet owner.

2. WOW, as a person leaning toward JE, I find your post rather petty.
"He is also the owner of three dogs who he references in his statement. Obama is not a pet owner." ? So the man doesn't own a pet. He must not be able to empathize with pet owners.

3. I am only pointing out that JRE has " stood " for animal rights and has fought for their interests
since the beginning.Obama has never indicated any kind of interest or support for those issues.Obama himself has mentioned that he has no pets but may buy the girls a puppy if he wins. John has mentioned his pets by name in his position and has spoken of the joy they bring to his life. I am not saying Obama cannot empathize with pet owners.I am saying this is obviously not a major issue for him.

This is a major issue for me and I was thrilled when John spoke about the pet food recall. My Saracat died as a result of that contamination. I was pleased that one of the candidates cared enough to address that issue. He is the only candidate who has.
