Here's a hopeful sign: Early voting started this weekend in IL, and I decided that I couldn't wait. I went to my polling place (far north side of Chicago) despite the fact that it's about 15 below outside with wind chill. When I got there, the line was to the door! I've never been so happy to wait in a line.

Wow, I'm a geek. But, still! That's awesome, right?

2. I voted in Cook County today, too!
At least, I assume my committeeman found someone to do it for me. I haven't lived there in four years.

4. It is 15 degrees in Illinois? I'm in Iowa and it is -3 at 1:45 pm.
Windchill -18.

Are you in southern Illinois?

I'm happy to hear about the line.

12. Yeah, that would be a bad idea.
It does serve a purpose, though: most of the mosquitoes die in this weather.

18. Yup. At least. That's the COLDEST I've ever been in my life.

February. Single-digit temperatures with killing windchill ... walking from the Hyatt Regency to the IBM building on State Street - across from the circular, multi-tiered parking/apartment buildings. Even though I had a heavy, pile-lined, sueded leather coat, gloves, hat, wool trousers, and good shoes ... that wind sliced through me like an iceberg through the Titanic. It was, quite literally, life-threatening cold. I'll NEVER forget those days.

20. The IBM Plaza is considered just about the worst windchill spot in the whole city
Can you imagine the days when women mostly wore skirts even in winter? As a young secretary I worked across from the Wrigley Building, and just crossing the Michigan Ave bridge would turn my chubby legs red and then white with cold. Here's to telecommuting!

11. Dayum, I am waiting for a warmer day
Like that's gonna happen.

But my early polling place is a tiny branch library, and regular is a senior citizen apt hi-rise, and there's almost never any waiting there.

Maybe that explains why there were so many cops at the library yesterday.

Hey, have you ever gone to the Kitty Moon, that jazz club a little south of Clark and Devon? GreatAuntofTriplets used to live right over there, too, but she moved.

17. Hope you never ate at Barry's
I will order from anywhere but there.

To quote a favorite song, I'm an old pervert and I don't get around much anymore. But I hear it's a nice place.

But there's a lot of good stuff down that way.
