I'm offended by the resident calling us consumers all the time. We're citizens, jerk.

He probably thinks "consumers" is the word you use to describe people who are being "conned".

I read a fascinating essay discussing the modern trend to use "taxpayer" in lieu of "citizen". The basic upshot was that it reduces citizenship to a transaction.

Until the 1950's, "consumption" was a disease, and "consumer" was a bad thing.
