I just got off the phone with my Republican Dad.
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 06:58 PM by 11 Bravo
Dad's a retired career Naval officer: ex-fighter pilot - (WWII and Korea), carrier skipper - (Vietnam), and he has never voted for a Democrat in his life. But there's more to him than that.
When I came back from Vietnam, I was a little bit nicked up, and had to spend some time at Walter Reed AMC. Dad was between tours, and came to visit me every day. When I told him I was going to become active in VVAW he looked me in the eye and said, "Son, you're a man, and you proved that on the field of battle (yeah, he talks like that). He went on to tell me, "You have the right to say anything you wish about this fucking war." Then he headed back to Yankee Station to do his duty as he saw it.
Tonight he told me he that has a brain tumor. We'll find out more in the days to come, but in the interim, I would sure appreciate the prayers, karma, or whtever else DU has to offer.
I love my Dad.

on edit: changed "military" officer to "Naval" officer. Dad would go skittles on me if I hadn't fixed that.

50 bombing missions in WW11, and duty in Korea. Then into intelligence. I loved him very much and appreciated his bravery (3 Distinguished Crosses). Sadly, he passed several years ago. I sincerely hope they have caught the tumor in time and it is not in a precarious spot in the brain. BTW, my father was a naval pilot in Vietnam. He went on to spend 21 years in the military and Ronnie Ray Gun cut his pension while the Contras got more money. He still voted republican up until when * ran, but then voted repuke again after 9-11. Bad habits are hard to break.

43. what did he think of America's military budget?
Good luck on his health
unfortunately, your father was part of the problem we're in now. that's the cruelest part of your story. Everybody knew the USA was blessed, in so many ways, from its beginning, and americans took pride in the blessings, but can't anyone see the unimaginable waste that rightwing politics entails wherever its found? In a poor little loser nation like Haiti, the waste of resources and energy and life is terrible enough, but when one considers the waste regards the USA- it beggars description! We went to the moon 2 generations ago, over a decade before the national debt had even hit a trillion dollars! It's probably boorish to raise these issues, in this context, as your personal stake is so high, and i apologise but- my foster father was seriously injured in action during WW2, and in many ways he never recovered, being a silent presence all the years i was part of the family, and i know your father trumps any pissant political angle, but militarism really set the US up for the gang of bush bloodsuckers who probably were the main danger to the USA all the time; and them reactionary political forces acted to suborn your father, all the fathers who 'never voted for a democrat' in their lives.

60. DAMN, not another one!

What is with all these fucking brain tumors?? Maybe I'm just noticing them more in the past few years, but still..

Lost my sister-in-law to one a few years ago; then my sister was diagnosed with one last year. Thankfully hers is a benign one that seems to have responded well to radiation. One of my best friends from school found out last week that his sister has one.

Hang in there, 11Bravo. Strong vibes for you & your Dad; here's hoping it's a benign one.
