OBAMA WINS MOST NEVADA DELEGATES
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 06:50 PM by kpete
OBAMA WINS MOST NEVADA DELEGATES...Barack Obama may have won the most delegates in Saturday's Nevada Caucus, even though Hillary Clinton bested his statewide turnout by about six points.

A source with knowledge of the Nevada Democratic Party's projections told The Nation that under the arcane weighting system, Obama would win 13 national convention delegates and Clinton would win 12 delegates. The state party has not released an official count yet.

UPDATE: The Obama Campaign is now pushing hard to promote this delegate victory. The campaign is convening a post-caucus conference call for reporters -- something that only winning campaigns usually do -- and circulating numerous Clinton quotes about how delegates are the only thing that matter. From the new press release:

Senator Obama was awarded 13 delegates to Senator Clinton's 12. As Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson said, "This is a race for delegates…It is not a battle for individual states. As David knows, we are well past the time when any state will have a disproportionate influence on the nominating process."

11. Rural precincts and the much discussed at large casino caucus precincts
are weighted more heavily in the count that regular caucus precincts.

3. Super Delegates?
Most people don't realize that Obama got more NH delegates than Clinton, either. Well, according to CNN, anyway:

12. Ahhh, I wasn't sure
Thanks for the info. Like someone said, I'm constantly confused by the different ways states choose their delegates.

20. I don't have the official reason why they're weighted
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 07:16 PM by Emit
I only know they are to give more pull to the rurals. I have no idea why they weighted the at large caucuses in the casinos -- I think that was part of the controversy, though. I read somewhere the other night -- don't know if it's true -- that it takes five voters in rural orecincts to get one delegate and it takes about 50 people in other precincts such as in LV areas to get one delegate. On edit, again, as far as the rurals, it has to do with population, and trying to even out the "pull" -- these are very small precincts.

Wish I had more info -- that's all I know now and if I find more info, I'll post it.

4. Obama is still proving he's more electable than Hillary in November
why? Her stronghold is Las Vegas which will go for the Dem nominee anyway in November. Obama proves he can win in rural areas outside of LV that we will need to win the state in November.

15. Winning the votes of Dems in rural counties doe snot mean he will win the county in
November. The republicans get to vote in that election too and they will outnumber the Dems in most of those counties.

10. have been scratching my head how Clinton won...
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 06:59 PM by medeak
another case imo of media jumping to conclusions

Barack Obama captured the most in Elko County by a large margin, 62 percent to Clinton's 30 percent. John Edwards took about 6 percent, and other candidates were left with nothing.

Obama won White Pine County with 45 percent to Clinton's 40 percent; Humboldt County with 51 percent to Clinton's 34 percent; and Washoe County with 50 percent to Clinton's 40 percent.

Clinton won Clark County with 54 percent to Obama's 43 percent; Nye County with 58 percent to Obama's 38 percent; and Lincoln County with 58 percent to Obama's 26 percent.
