Al Gore will be the Democratic nominee in 2008
It is looking ever more likely that no candidate will win sufficient delegates to claim the nomination prior to the convention.

In this scenario, The candidate with the the third highest amount of delegates would be in a position to be a king-maker, but if John Edwards is that candidate, I think it is unlikely that he would be willing to put either of his rivals over the top.

This could lead to a deadlocked convention, with delegates casting about for alternatives. As Al Gore has not endorsed any candidate, and owing to his high level of appeal within the party, it seems very possible that his name will be put forward as the compromise candidate. In a contentious atmosphere, Mr. Gore could unify a party that seems to fracturing during the early part of the primary process.

I really do think that this is the scenario that will play out for the democrats.

------------------------

On the GOP side, a very similiar scenario may develop. If so, their likely compromise candidate would be the Newt.

8. I don´t thnk he will need too many.
Obama and Clinton will split enough of the delegates that Edwards will only need about 10 percent to keep either of the two of them from reaching the matching number on the first ballot.

39. 4049 total delegates, 2025 for nomination
Edwards currently has 52. He should be able to pick up another 350. That would mean Obama or Clinton would only need about 1600 to stop the other from hitting 2025. This seems possible to me.

26.  Sorry, you need to come down from your cloud
And I believe he is absent from this campaign because it is the same crap we see every campaign cycle and he has more important things to do. And if you listen to John Edwards, he is talking about EXACTLY what Al Gore would be talking about and look at how the corporate media is going after him. If you think it wouldn't happen to Mr. Gore draft or no draft, you really are delusional.

If he isn´t running until the end of August, it is that much less time for the media to attack him. Also, they would be forced to cover the story about how he came out of nowhere to claim the nomination.

Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 05:52 PM by RestoreGore
Since his supposed "supporters" on the whole don't even care to discuss what he is doing otherwise to set the stage for a great change simply because he isn't doing this the way they want him to. You also think he is out of this process? Well, I beg to differ. Try reading about what he is launching this next month and maybe then you will see just how involved he really is because again, the SYSTEM will not allow him to ascend to the presidency. They blocked him in 2000, they stole it twice, and now they are blocking John Edwards who is delivering I would say the same message Al Gore would if he were running. Doesn't that tell you anything? The Democratic "establishment" is not on the same wavelentgth we are on. They are in it to keep THEIR status quo and won't take anyone screwing with it.

Why do you think John Edwards is being virtually dismissed? Because he stated we can't go from a corporate Republican status quo to a corporate Democratic status quo. So do you HONESTLY then believe that this military industrial complex, let alone the machinery behind Hillary Clinton is going to allow that from Al Gore either? Again, you need to come back to reality because brokered conventions do not happen anymore, especially with superdelegates going with the establishment pick.

Unless YOU are willing to get up and fight that system first and knock it all down, not even a "draft" is going to keep the real "deciders" from doing ANYTHING to keep it from changing. And frankly, the work Mr. Gore is part of out here as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and statesman is VERY INPORTANT out here as he is not coming up against the brick walls he would in Washington DC, IF he were even allowed to get there which is not a guarantee at this time.

I would think after him being in it for thirty years he would know about that better than you or me which is why he is doing what he is doing, and I frankly don't want to see him FORCED into a situation he doesn't want again. If he sees an urgency to do anything along those lines and gets in HIMSELF, fine. Otherwise, I don't support it.

21. Actually it's thought Bloomberg wanted Gore
to run and approached him several times per several reports. That doesn't make sense to me, he can't give Gore a billion to run. Share the ticket?

So many stories. Hearing again today Bloomberg will probably only run if Hillary is the Dem candidate against certain republicans. (rudy, huck, didn't mention McCain)
That he wouldn't run against Obama. Maybe that's why they didn't mention McCain. He only wants to run if there is a big middle he can get and McCain and Obama draw independents

But they all just talk.

17. It's not going to happen. Sorry.
Our nominee will almost certainly be Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. Edwards has an extremely slim chance. Other than those three, nobody could possibly be the Dem nominee -- not Gore, not anyone else.

If neither Obama nor Clinton gets enough delegates to win the nomination, (a highly unlikely scenario), then Edwards is the kingmaker. The winner -- either Clinton or Obama -- will be whoever gets Edwards' delegates -- and they would likely come at a very steep price.

33. Don't you think the sooner Edwards releases his...
..delegates, the more that would benefit Obama?

I know Edwards has stated he is in it till the convention, though more pragmatic Edwards supporters have sadly acknowledged that he will ultimately put the good of the part ahead of his own political aspirations.

Better to release them soon, then hang on to them and increase the odds of a bitter or brokered convention.

Even without formally endorsing Obama or Clinton, I believe if Edwards released his delegates; they would break 2 to 1 for Obama.

And I'd rather see that scenario happen before February 5th if Edwards has another very disappointing showing in SC.

38. what a compliment to the Edwards supporters and
delegates; your mission is to be a tool of the Obama campaign whether or not that is your choice. Now that Obama no longer sees Edwards candidacy as a help against Hillary, Edwards should drop out, endorse Obama and all his supporters should just fall in line like sheep. Wow, I am so impressed with the respect the Obama team has for Edwards supporters.

41. Actually, I have been an Edwards supporter...
But unless he has an amazing comeback in SC next week - he's out of it.

You may not want to admit it, but I'm being realistic.

As a default position, I sure as hell don't want Hillary as our nominee - that guarantee's the status quo of the old guard will continue. I'd be thrilled if Edwards were to pull off an comeback, but if not - then if folks don't team up as a Hillary alternative - we will get Hillary.

That also may mean we will lose the GE.

Probably sooner rather then later, Edwards supporters will have to chose between Obama and Clinton (or neither).

If so, better Obama by a long shot.

19. I hope so
But I don't think it will happen. First of all, the Superdelegates number almost 800, more than a third of the 2200 and change needed to nominate. These are current Dem office-holders - establishment types- and I'll assume most will go with the DLC candidate.
Plus, Gore has said he's not in... and has given no indication he'll reconsider that decision.
Things are looking pretty bleak right now for the democratic wing of the party, marginalized, ignored, and taken for granted by the 2 leading candidates. Third party in the GE will probably be the only way to make our voices heard, and try again in '12.

43. Good luck with that...
Highly, highly doubtful.

One of the candidates will come out of February 5th with a distinct lead and momentum. No idea which - but that momentum will likely determine the direction of the rest of the primaries (which is a dead shame - given how many of us will not have had a chance to vote by that time.)

I would love Gore to be "the One" - but I gave up that hope months ago. And now, no way. Before he could have united, now far too many are invested in their candidate of choice - and instead of just one camp being frustrated by the direction (and antics) of the campaign and hard to unite behind the front runner - there would be multiple disatisfied and resentful camps making it even harder to unite.

52. You can't be serious. If you don't understand Al Gore's
accomplishments or the attraction of many progressives to him, then you've either been in a cave, or you have some serious catching up to do on your reading and film-viewing.

Al has been very outspoken years ahead of the rest of the crowd about a lot of issues that line up with most progressives (healthcare, the media conglomerates, the Iraq war). The major questionable issue was his stance on NAFTA, but we don't know his current views on that. Many people have changed their minds about that over time, as did I.
