The "New" New Democrats

"In politics, nothing is so unsettling as half a success. After a catastrophe, the next generation rebuilds from scratch. After a heroic victory, they inherit the triumph. But half a success tantalizes and confuses; it dangles before the eyes a glaring discrepancy between promise and performance."
- Todd Gitlin, The Sixties

The Democrats are currently fighting an ideological battle within their own Party of the likes that hasn't been seen since the Stalinists fought it out with the Socialists and Trotskyists for control of their Party in 1936.

The current "New" New Left of the Democratic Party are mainly made up of young computer savvy kids weened during the Bush Sr administration, grew their teeth under Clinton, and lost their virginity with Howard Dean. Now with "Red" Cindy Sheehan at their side playing den mother, these "New" New Democrats, with their principled stand on Iraq, are attempting to steer the stoogy Democratic Party away from the rocky shoals of political irrelevancy in '08..

"It will be the 1960s all over again." wails Dick Morris in his on-line column. His woeful message of gloom-n-doom will surely send chills down the spines of any Democrat old enough to remember Hubert Humprey and the 1968 Democratic Convention. For the Democrats, politically the 60's were an dismal era of in-fighting and throat cutting, disappointments and defeats. It will be interesting to see if Obama will play the "Eugene McCarthy" card next to Hillary's "Humprey"

It appears the "New" New Democrats are finding themselves in the same positions as the alcoholic derlicts in the Eugene O'Neil play "The Iceman Cometh" Their pipe dream - "long since looted and scuttled" - of doing a better job than the Repuglicans has, in the words of O'Neill, "the stink of nickel whiskey on its breath".

"What's it matter if the truth is that their favoring breeze has the stink of nickel whiskey on its breath, and their sea is a growler of lager and ale, and their ships are long since looted and scuttled and sunk on the bottom? To hell with the truth! As the history of the world proves, the truth has no bearing on anything. It's irrelevant and immaterial, as the lawyers say. The lie of a pipe dream is what gives life to the whole misbegotten mad lot of us, drunk or sober."
Jeez-us, the lies of the Democratic Party's pipe dream (and political platform) is what gives life to the whole misbegotten mad lot of them, drunk or sober.
