Your calendar probably says that January 22 is the full moon.
But depending on where you live, the moon on the night of January 21 might be closer to full for you.
That’s true for all of us in the U.S. Full moon comes at 13:35 Universal Time on Tuesday, January 22.
That’s before dawn Tuesday for the central U.S.
This is the first full moon of the year – sometimes called the Wolf Moon. Like all full moons, it
happens at the same moment for everyone worldwide, but our clocks say different times. In the western
U.S. and Canada, the full moon will shine in the west at the precise full moon Tuesday morning. In East Asia and Australia, the moon is precisely full in the evening hours after sunset tomorrow.
There, the moon is in the eastern sky at the exact moment of full moon. No matter where you are, a
full-looking moon shines nearly from dusk until dawn on both January 21 and January 22.
By the 23rd, you’ll see the moon is beginning to wane.
By the way, as seen from the northern hemisphere, the January full moon always follows a high path
across the sky, like the sun in summer. As seen from the southern hemisphere –
where it’s summer now – this moon follows the low path of the winter sun.
