Extended heavy rain has caused area creeks to overflow their banks, including Bear Creek. Local water officials predict Bear Creek will crest around 6 a.m. Bear Creek is topping its banks near the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad trestle. Bear Creek has overflowed west of R Street, requiring the evacuation of the residents of Shadow Brook Apartments and the Riviera Mobile Home Park. Highway 59 between 16th Street and Olive Avenue has been closed to through traffic. A temporary emergency shelter with 100 beds has been set up at Merced High School and 250 more beds are on the way to be used if needed. Buses are being used to evacuate the mobile home park. As of 4 a.m. the water in the park was reported to be ankle-deep. The state of emergency was declared at 11:45 p.m. Monday by City Manager James Marshall acting as the City’s Director of Civil Defense and Emergency. More than 120 emergency workers from the City and surrounding agencies have responded to the disaster. The City is coordinating its efforts with the Merced Irrigation District, which maintains the waterways.
