Oh wise DUers - somebody must know the answer to this question
If there is a brokered Republican convention, can somebody who dropped out participate in it? In other words, if a candidate has formally gotten out of the race (Hunter or Thompson) and there is no obvious front-runner for the Republican race which then creates a brokered convention, can the candidates who have dropped out return and compete in the brokered convention?

1. If they do it like they did in the past, there is always the
possibility of a "dark horse" being promoted at the convention. A dark horse is someone who wasn't running in the primaries but someone that the party nabobs have put their influence behind as a viable candidate bringing that candidate up into the open to win the delegates the other candidates couldn't. Since the former candidates whom you mentioned couldn't get the delegates they would need, I doubt if they would qualify as dark horses.

2. Sure, if they don't have a Nominee on the first vote they could give it to the Janitor
Or anybody else they decided on. It still won't matter. George Bush has cut the legs out from under the Republican Party for at least a generation to come.
