Clinton administration praise for genocidal Suharto: "He's our kind of guy"
"The U.S. was still training the most repressive elements of Indonesia's security forces as Suharto's rule was collapsing in 1998, and the Clinton administration had established especially close relations with the dictator ("our kind of guy," according to a senior administration official quoted in the New York Times, 10/31/95)."

I'll remember that the next time James carville acts like Hugo Chavez (who, while questionable in his consolidation of power, is neither a threat or a butcher in the least)is the next Hitler

Survivors describe mass killings under Indonesian dictator Suharto
By ANTHONY DEUTSCH,AP
Posted: 2008-01-27 17:11:53
BLITAR, Indonesia (AP) - Hiding out in the dense, humid jungle, Markus Talam watched Indonesian soldiers herd manacled prisoners from trucks, line them up and mow them down with round after round of automatic weapons fire.

It was 1968, and the killings were part of a final offensive by forces under Gen. Suharto to wipe out the communist party and secure his position as leader of Indonesia, now the world's most populous Muslim nation.

"They gunned them down and dumped their bodies in a mass grave dug by other prisoners. I remember the sound of the guns clearly: tat-tat, tat-tat, tat-tat ... over and over again," said Talam, 68, who was later jailed for 10 years after being named a leftist sympathizer.

Suharto, who died on Sunday at a Jakarta hospital, seized control of the military in 1965 and ruled the country for 32 years, suppressing dissent with force and supported by an American government at the height of the Cold War.

1. The fine thing about Edwards & Obama is that they have no history
of anything at all as far as foreign policy. No experience that could be twisted one way or the other.

3. I note that you DON'T say
That by the end of their terms, they would not have similar histories of alliances with brutal dictators.

Isn't it wonderful how clean people can be when they weren't there at the time? Like Obama with the IWR.

6. probably not, the national security council really runs the show
ever since world war II. that's why only candidates who support this kind of shit are allowed in debates and considered legitimate by the powers that be
and of course, mr. chomsky is virtually banned from television while every rightwing hack has a forum

"AMY GOODMAN: Brad, how difficult was it to get this declassified? The memos that you got? And how long were these memos about Ford and Kissinger’s meeting with the long reigning Suharto? How long were they kept classified?

BRAD SIMPSON: Well, they are kept classified until the fall of 2002. We now know, actually, that a Congressman from Minnesota, Donald Fraser, had actually attempted to declassify the memo, the so-called Smoking Gun Memo, the transcript of General Suharto’s conversation with Gerald Ford, in December of 1975. Congressman Fraser actually tried to declassify this in document in 1978 during the Suharto adm--or during the Carter years and Carter’s National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, realizing full well the explosive nature of this cable would show that the United States had been an accomplice in an international act of aggression, recommended that the State Department refuse to declassify the memo, a mere three years after the invasion.

And it took another 25 years after this episode before the cables were finally declassified and of course much more has come out..."

13. I'm kicking too
and for the same reasons. The passes people on this site give to murderers just because they happen to be Democrats would be really offensive if I wasn't sure it was down to ignorance not selective outrage.

So many people seem completely unaware of the trail of blood emanating from EVERY President's administration.

Empire can only be sustained via theft, many people will need to be killed before we are able to steal from them.
