Over the weekend, Fox News aired "Fighting to the Finish," an insider look at President Bush as he begins his final year in office and prepares to give his last State of the Union address. The news feature follows Bush at the White House, in travel, and sits with him for lengthy interviews at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
Fox's documentary presented Bush with an opportunity to reflect on what his legacy would be. He frequently invoked President Abraham Lincoln in the course of the discussion.
"I suspect Abraham Lincoln's approval rating wouldn't have been very good during the Civil War," the President said when asked which presidents inspire him. "600,000 people died. And yet Abraham Lincoln never lost sight of the moral truth that all men are created equal under God."
Bush also reflects on the criticism Lincoln received for the Gettysburg Address at the time it was given and applied it to his presidency.
"In terms of how I've done, history takes awhile to figure it out," he told Fox News' Brett Baird.
