Al Gore's Current Media files for $100 million IPO

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Current Media Inc, owner of the youth-focused television network founded by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, plans to raise up to $100 million in an initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock market.

The company, of which Gore is executive chairman, owns Current TV, an interactive cable television network that features videos submitted by viewers as well as professionally produced content.

Aimed at viewers aged 18 to 34, Current TV was launched in August 2005 to 19 million U.S. households. It is now available in 51 million households in the United States, Britain and Ireland.

The network, which won a prime-time Emmy award last year, has a stated goal of "democratizing media" by engaging young adults through interactive television.

"We believe the combination of our television and Internet platforms creates an immersive and interactive viewer experience for our growing global audience, where the audience participates in both the creation and selection of the content," Current Media said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Current Media said Gore, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, and Hyatt have been instrumental in securing distribution and advertising agreements for Current TV. It warned that the departure of either executive would be a risk.

"In particular, if Mr. Gore were no longer actively involved in our business or no longer to hold a substantial ownership stake in us, our relationships with key distributors and our business could be materially and adversely affected," Current Media said in the filing.

1. this is great news...
Even though I'm not their target demo, I really enjoy when I get a chance to watch. And apparently so do the kids.

3. I'm not in the target either, but I participate on the site...
And am looking to make a pod come this spring. I think it is a great site for all regardless of your age. Hopefully this will also bring more growth and participation which then brings the message to more people that their voices matter. God, I love that man. ;-).

4. "the departure of either executive would be a risk."
This is good news for Al, but another reason that he can't accept a "draft" or engage in a run for the White House. Much of the success of this IPO requires him to be a part of the company. This may even preclude him from endorsing or campaigning for another candidate. Add this to his recent joining of a large venture capital firm and I think Mr. Gore is on the sidelines this year.

10. yes, sidelines regarding political campaigns, but the front lines regarding innovations
This along with his launching the ad campaign for The Alliance for Climate Protection this coming February is big news not only for him, but for all of us.

11. I totally agree with you
I only mentioned this because "some people" still think that Al can ride in and save the Democratic Party. It does seem that he has other, more important priorities.

14. yes, other priorities some don't seem to think are important
And I think that leaves out a big chunk of the overall picture for them. The world needs saving, and only we can do that. Thankfully good men like Mr. Gore are here to inspire us to see that.

9. Current wants to do this to pay off debts, But it is huge regarding getting it out to the public
And it is exciting. We can now not only participate regarding content, but can also share in the profits.

13. Well, I don't fall under any of those categories and I think it is fairly good
There are many pods on Current about imnportant issues (including climate change) that you don't see on the MSM. There was one pod on Madagascar and the environmental devastation there that was very well done. One on subsistence farming in Africa that I think all should see. Pods about the lives of people again, that you don't see on thw MSM. That is the point of it. It is our station, so I believe that if anyone doesn't like the content they can vote one way or the other for or against it, or make their own pods and participate on the website which is interactive with the channel. And there are others there outside the demographic like myself that contribute there, especially regarding the 2008 elections. So this isn't just news to a certain group you want to pidgeonhole, this is news for anyone who wants a tv station they can help mold to reach not only the younger generation but those of us looking for an alternate to the crap cable networks we have now.
