Middle-age is truly depressing, study finds
Oh goody.

The British and U.S. researchers found that happiness for people ranging from Albania to Zimbabwe follows a U-shaped curve where life begins cheerful before turning tough during middle age and then returning to the joys of youth in the golden years.

1. My life is officially half over, going by today's average life span.
That's pretty fucking depressing, now that I'm dwelling on it. Thanks for your stupid post. x(

2. Happy I got through it relatively unscathed.
Now that I'm entering geezerhood I'm back to the joy part.

5. I agree
The older I get, the better I feel.

I was nearly suicidal at 35-40.

I'm 52 now.

10. You'd be surprised...
...how lousy it gets again around 57 - 58. So there's that to look forward to.

You'll need several of these by noon each day just to cope.

I hope I don't actually need this...

16. I'm with you there.
It peaked for me at age 35 and went on until about 37. Not suicidal, but depressed and filled with thoughts of mortality. I was extremely overweight and withdrawn.

Little by little I've learned to accept reality and gotten my weight under control and am no longer consumed by those thoughts.

I still don't LIKE mortality (the funny thing is aging, wrinkles, gray, etc. don't bug me that much, but loss of mobility and cognitive function are scary) but have learned to accept it.

Now I want to focus on living my remaining years in the best way I can.

I guess I'm actually kinda grateful I had my midlife crisis on the early side - now there's that many more years I can use more productively and happily.

18. At 40 - Serious Midlife Crisis Set In
It was as if I had no control over my actions. I did some pretty dumb things, except for losing 40 LBS. Thank God I made it through that scary time without losing everything else that mattered. I'm now 55 and aside from the aches/pains physically - I'm a happy camper.

20. Similar story here. I've been happier in my 50's (now) than I was
as a child or young adult.

9. No shit. It's a shame my middle-age years coincide with...
the madness that is GD:P. It can lead one to feel hopeless indeed.

I really, really, really need to stay outta there.

13. I agree with that.
I'm 61 now, and I'm much happier and content than I was when I was 50. Of course, it may have something to do with the fact that I'm not still married to my abusive, drug-addicted, alcoholic ex-husband.

With age comes wisdom. I never should have made that mistake.

19. I'm not on their curve, alas.
Childhood and the teen years sucked. 20-45 sucked only slightly less. Life sucks again and does not look like it will get too much better, even with medications and therapy. Oh, well.

Life-long dysthemia with intermittent depressions sucks.
