How to beat McCain?
McCain's popularity scares me (http://www.pollingreport.com/wh08gen.htm). How to beat him?

The Democratic candidate should stress:

- Universal health care
- Iraq

McCain won't solve any of these. Other ideas?

That would do very nicely!

2. Iraq is key - he's vulnerable there.
there may be racial issues with some of his staff, this was mentioned earlier. He's also one of the Keating 5.

4. I agree that Iraq will be important -- keep hammering it home that he wants
a continued presence, WE want our troops home!

Also, bring up the amounts of money, for example, Bush is asking for arms/Egypt, while our country is in the most fragile state in a long time.

8. Iraq isn't key unless you link it to the economy.
Our infrastructure is being starved for Iraq. Everything in our government has been starved to feed Iraq. SAY SO.

The issue is NOT Iraq. The issue is CAN I KEEP MY HOME? WHAT HAPPENS IF/WHEN I LOSE MY JOB? WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET SICK? HOW CAN I PAY MY BILLS IF I CAN'T FIND WORK????

The economy is a disaster. People want to hear about what's happening to US, HERE. What's happening to the people in Iraq...we don't actually give a damn.

We want to hear how we're going to be saved from this disaster at home.

19. I give a damn.
Unlike the anti-choice folks, some of us can pay attention to more than one issue at a time. Sure, I'm concerned about the economy - but that doesn't make me any the less concerned about the illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq. END THE WAR NOW!

21. I disagree
We are watching our soldiers die over there to no purpose, and I think the American people actually do care about that. Because if they don't fuck them. Let them have McCain.

I do agree with connecting the current disaster in Iraq to what is going on at home.

3. Tie him to BUSH, over and over ...
Even the average die-hard Republicans believe the country is on the wrong track due to BushCo's policies - they don't want another eight years of the same thing any more than we do.

18. Ah, the great irony of it all!
Had McCain stuck to his 'maverick' image, his "I'm a good conservative Republican and I strongly disagree with this president" stance, he would have been perfectly poised to breeze through a campaign on the "I'll bring about real change for the better" platform.

Now he's stuck with his lips firmly glued to Bush's ass.

Wonder how often he thinks back on that, and how he blew it for himself ...

16. Emphasize the words out of his own mouth
McCain has shot off his mouth numerous times over the last seven years. What may have seemed cute or amusing when McCain was the elderly senator from AZ won't seem so damned funny now that he may be entrusted with the safety of the United States.

If his own words are arranged and used against him, I'm quite convinced that McCain can be made to look unstable--a loose cannon.

The talking points should include his own ambivalence over the Iraq war, but especially his late comments about how troops being there for a hundred years.

McCain also has nothing worthwhile to say about domestic policy. His health care policy is not going to be popular with patients or physicians.

Also, he has been very crass about a potential engagement with Iran. His comments demonstrate a lack of caution or even dignity.

31. McCain on Meet the press
Here's McCain on Meet the press about the hundred years in Iraq:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUE-QmH-n4Q&feature=related

It seems he then assumes Iraq to be as peaceful for Americans as South Korea, Germany etc. are now. He doesn't say what to do if that assumption is not met, so he isn't actually saying much. But everyone will now this means he probably will keep troops there longer than any Democrat will.

20. My mother is pissed off about his age.
When a 73 year old thinks a 71 year old is "too damn old" to be president, that could be a problem for him, LOL! She also resents the fact that many people are forced to retire because of their age, yet McCain could become president.

Personally, I think "100 years in Iraq" is his biggest vulnerability.

22. How about the McCain Birthday Bash with Bush 24 hours after Katrina?
I don't know how to insert a photo but at the link below is one of the two of them yucking it up while thousands were suffering and waiting for help in New Orleans. There are photos of them with the birthday cake here and I remember one with them playing the guitar together on that day....

I remember thinking how disgusting it was to see them frolicking while thousands were in utter misery here.

"August 30, morning: Bush and McCain yok it up over McCain's birthday cake in El Mirage, Arizona, before Bush delivers a speech on immigration. Katrina has moved on, but the swath of destruction through Louisiana and Mississippi is just now being calculated. Hundreds are already dead; hundreds more are dying from injuries; thousands are dispossessed, with no food, water, or medical attention. But Bush is enjoying John McCain's birthday cake."

24. By not ceding the middle ground.
If the Democrats nominate a polarizing figure (not going to name names here...), they will both mobilize the Republican base in a way John McCain can't AND cede the independents to McCain. McCain will win in a landslide and the Republicans will have a true mandate if we nominate a candidate like I have described.

28. He'll Do It All Himself
The right wing blogs and talk shows are all a-flutter...they see the future and they're not very happy. With Rudeeee now gone, they're stuck with their worst nightmares...none are acceptable and whoever wins the nomination will face a very fractured party.

McCain is a tired, old man who will be at the eye of a storm...a disentigrating party that will only support him with lip service but little else. He'll be cash-strapped and we'll see a 10% or more decrease in their vote. Add to this the crumbling infrastructure...Davis' announcement today shows how deep the problems are. He'll be lucky to hold onto the "ooalition" that is supporting him now while Democrats continue to remain energized. You can already see the wear of the campaign on the guy and how he's not looking much beyond winning the nomination. At 71, this is a big grind.

The right think of McCain similar to how many here view Hillary...a corporate moderate...and not "true" to "conservative" tenets. No matter what he says or does, he fights against both history and his own party as much as he will against any Democrts.

30. "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"
or "make it a hundred" about the years we will be in Iraq. Also, get the clip of McCain sayin on 2/20/05 that Hillary "would make a very good president" on Meet the Press. I still remember it to this day. But I still think Romney would be easier because he has less character image and isn't as popular. So I called their campaign pertending to be a Rush Dittohead, and made them aware of Hillary's statements and suggested a commercial. We will wreck mitt worse than mccain
