We've come such a long way, baby..... or not....
I was just talking with a librarian, asking which of two books I would review, if she had a preference.

She pointed to one and said, "Black faces on a cover won't circulate here."

Now, just so you know... this isn't the bigoted south.

This community is affluent, prides itself on being educated and broad-minded and ever-so-aware and 21st Century.

She said, "I'm not happy to say that, and we can give it a try if you like."

As if today weren't bad enough, I get that kind of reality.

In case anyone is interested, the author is one of my faves... Bebe Moore Campbell, and the book in question is a great read, "Brothers And Sisters".

I think I'm going to be sick at the "hidden" bigotry of "progressive" intellectuals.....

"I'm going to do a display.... let's try it."

sigh.....

7. oh geez. I don't know what to say
that librarian obviously doesn't know how popular Bebe Moore Campbell is, for starters. And please don't let one person's stupidity get you down.

and yes. i hope you review it.
I think I'll go to my library and get it out. I'm looking for something to read...now that I have bit more free time.

16. Not the librarian! I lost my reply to you last night, it went away just as I clicked on "send"
sigh... :(

I was writing to tell you that this librarian has a heart of gold, and if you had seen the look of disgust on her face, and her upset tone of voice, you would have known that she wasn't happy to be reporting this to me... it was very upsetting to her, but.... she was telling me how it is, because she knows that I care.

Shortly after, what she did was come by my seat at the computer, and said, "We're going to go for it." She put up a new display called "Don't call her 'Honey'", and it includes books about really tough women. She included on about a black woman and we'll see what happens as time goes on.

She's really cool... it's the racist "liberals" in this town who suck!

9. I wish there was a way
it could be like Deep Space Nine, an old Star Trek series I'm re-watching. People didn't care or even comment on skin tones. I wish, on another level, we could go back to my personal world of 1956, when, as a kindergartener, my best friend and I shared the same name and played together, and noticed only that I was "vanilla" and she was "chocolate", and thought no more about it than that. Some day, I hope that skin color is no more remarkable to someone than hair color, height, or other physical characteristic.

10. The books won't circulate because
they are not being featured by the "how to be a soccer mom" magazines.

11. *sigh*
The more things change, huh?

My "not racist" mother in law calls the Latin part of our tiny town the "ethnically challenged" neighborhood. Nice, huh? Said it in front of my kids, no less.

12. My upbringing
was in a totally "Vanilla" township. My dad worked in a paint factory (in a nearby big city) and there were several chocolates employed there. Ethnic jokes weren't told (at least, not in our house) as a way to demean minorities - they were just "funny" reflections of the stereotypes that I saw/heard on national TV. My dad would tell them to his friends for a laugh, but he never addressed me personally with such. It wasn't until I was an adult myself, that I learned my dad's best Army buddy (during WWII) was a Mexican fella.
I honestly don't think I ever SPOKE to a negro until I joined the US Air Force in 1963. Then, there I was, bedding down right next to them! Any apprehensions I had about interacting with other races soon evaporated. They were just other people - as it should be.

I am very thankful for that.

15. I can't even imagine how you dealt wit that! :(
I once had a neighbor proud to be from the south, and used the "N" word at every opportunity. It made me :puke:

One day I said to her, "I can't change your prejudices, and I can't change your sad outlook on other human beings, but I don't want to hear those disgusting words anymore, so please don't use them around me."

Much to my surprise, that was the end of it. I seriously doubt that she changed her attitude, but at least I wasn't subjected to it.

:hi: :yourock: :hi:
