Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH): Extending unemployment insurance is a "disincentive" for people to get a job
http://gregg.senate.gov/public/

An extension to unemployment benefits is shaping up to be the central fight when this bill makes it to the Senate floor. The committee extends unemployment payments for 13 weeks for those whose benefits have run out, with 26 more weeks available in states with a 6.5 percent unemployment rate. Only four states qualify for this extra assistance: Alaska, Michigan, Mississippi and South Carolina. Grassley said he was willing to go along with the measure if it meant increasing households eligible for the rebates.

Republicans are vowing to fight this measure, pointing to a private-sector analysis that shows jobs grew in January 2008. Sen Gregg, R-N.H., railed against the need for the extension, saying it could actually have the reverse effect of what's intended in a stimulus bill.

"To extend unemployment insurance by a year, in areas where you have full employment, you give a disincentive for people to go out and get a job," Gregg said. His own state's unemployment rate is well below the national average, at 3.6 percent

1. What an asswad.
Unemployment compensation is barely enough to keep you from starving. Nobody would put off looking for a job just to get that pittance.

9. I could make more at min. wage than I can on Unemployment
by close to $100 per week. Too bad neither of those amounts is gonna keep the roof over our head. :(

3. Judd Greg: 30+ Years of the Master Race
Oh, Judd's on top, all right. He can't conceive of being under anyone else heel. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. He's just not that big, even after 30 years of sucking up to Reagan, Bush and Shrub.

Judd "The Dudd" Gregg was the fellow helped by the NH GOTV
phone-jamming scandal.

7. What a fucking jerk!
Apparently he doesn't understand that most people would rather work. That people have a sense of pride about making a living (or at least, a wage, for the time being). That most people who lose their jobs don't suddenly say, "Woo hoo! Now I can live off Uncle Sam!"

I work with people who are unable to work because of an on-the-job injury. Yes, they get time-loss payments (about 60% of their working wage), but I know first hand that the largest percentage of those people want to get back to work.

Losing a job, or not being able to work for awhile because of an injury, has a ripple effect in one's life. However, I doubt Senator Asshat will ever understand that.

8. when i tell my kids that in the early 70`s
you could quit a job and that afternoon you could get another. they`d hire you on the spot so if you wanted to work that day just dress for the job. those days are gone forever. 13 more weeks is 13 more weeks of food and gas to look for a job that does`t exist....

10. A few years ago, on average it took a person over 50
about 6 months to get a job assuming the person tried very hard. It probably takes longer now.

13. It took my husband...
...18 months here in New Hampshire (he is well over 50). Did I mention that he is one of those we hear so much about who is not well educated? He just has two degrees in math and 25 plus years in IT. He didn't confine his search to just this area either.

25. It took me a year. Maybe it takes longer if you are
better educated. Oh, and the job I got was just awful -- low pay for my education and responsibility and a very, very bad workplace, not in terms of the superficial, but in terms of really important things. I could not tell you how bad it was. I quit many months ago and my boss still owes me money. So the job you get over 50-60 is usually not very desirable.

11. Sure, just like health care causes sickness
and contraception causes pregnancy. So he says he that in areas where there is "full employment" there is some chance for the unemployed to find a job? Oh, well, no reason to think that anyone who earns an "R" for affiliation is sane.

14. Well Judd Gregg can put that theory to the test when he's unemployed after 2010
The only question is will we get Senator Lynch, Senator Shea-Porter, or Senator Hodes.

They leave government service to begin earning the
bribes that were saved up salaries to which their
deep knowledge of government operations entitles
them.

Judd will do just fine.

19. Remember, unemployment numbers don't count many people.
Roughly, unempolyment numbers only count people
receiving unemployment compensation. So if we
completely ended unemployment compensation, that
would end "unemployment" as well!

Life in Republican la-la land has these funny
quirks, you know?

So I can exert control over the lives of others and turn my holier-than-thou ideology into law - while making the claim that I'm serving the people.
