Home Depot to cut 500 jobs
http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2008/01/28/daily46.html?f=et50&ana=e_du

The Home Depot Inc. plans to cut about 10 percent of its workforce, or about 500 jobs, at its Atlanta headquarters, according to a story by The Associated Press.

Home Depot spokespeople have not returned calls to Atlanta Business Chronicle to ask about the job cuts.

The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer attributed the cuts to the slowing U.S. economy. The company has not reported fourth-quarter earnings, but its third-quarter profit fell about 27 percent to $1.1 billion on $19 billion in sales.

HOW'S THAT ECONOMY AGAIN GEORGE???????????????????

1. Lowes and Home Depot boomed when people
were buying homes. You buy a home and live in those places for a couple of weeks, believe me, I know. There is less activity in the home improvement area going on.

2. Not in
Southern Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. Thanks to the hurricanes the building business is booming and real estate is doing fairly well right now in those areas.

9. The job cuts were at the headquarters, not the stores...
The stores will continue to have the same amount of understaffed, demoralized employees they had before. For now, anyway.

There is another side to this, though. Sooner or later business will pick up for Home Despot for no other reason than pent-up demand. People staying longer in their current homes means things start to break.

10. Yeah im a little tired of it...
they are cutting some jobs to streamline a little.. They are getting rid of the night freight team and employing part timers to stock during the early and late hours... The stores will be completely locked down at night, no more overnight crews... They are also cutting a special HD that does inventory counts and ordering, shifting the ordering to dept heads, and creating a job for counts that is the same pay scale as a cashier...

All and all they are cutting about 15-20 full time jobs per store. <10-15 over night stocking, 3-5 counters>

They are creating about 20 part time jobs, and 2 full time for counting at cashier pay...

I have mixed feelings about this because people were told early this month that their jobs would be dissolved by the first week of March. However, seeing the operations in this company I am optimistic that this is cutting a lot of fat and helping to get rid of some redundant jobs..

So I donno... I can tell you that morale is WAY down at the big orange life sucker...
